I had no idea how painful this surgery would be. I am in my first night in the hospital and I have never had so much pain in my life.

I did not understand the gas pain heading my way or the fact I would puke after ever shot of pain medicine.

Right now I am scared to death of eating a thing and having this pain return at home. And I would kill for a huge gulp of water!!!

This surgery is no joke and I am so far from poking fun at myself it isn't even funny.

If you had this surgery you are a freakin rockstar and you deserve every pound lost!!!!

Walk, walk, walk. It is the only thing that helps the pain from the gas. I don't think I ate anything in the hospital, just a few ice chips. It does get better...A LOT!!!

Hang in there and keep us posted.

Walking, heat packs, ice chips and go very very slowly. I promise you, the gas pains are the worst and they will get better.also don't be afraid to ask for gas pain medication in the hospital. The worse thing about this surgery is the gas they pump into your belly but it goes away after a few days. The gas x medicine helped me immensely. The other thing that helped was getting out of my bed in the hospital and sitting in the recliner all day when I wasn't walking. For me, the bed was not my friend, it made that gas pain worse. Good luck and hang in there.

It will get better everyday!

@bellabloom- I think you're a rockstar for posting while still in the hospital! I was so looped up during my hospital stay I couldn't keep my eyeballs straight, much less navigate the internet! You go! :)

I had my RNY this past Wed. Dec 3rd. Was discharged from hospital yesterday (Friday). Today is my first full day to get in all my Water and Protein. Have done well with that but I'm having pain still . I guess it's kinda like the gas pains in the hospital. Does this gas stay in you this long?? Or could I have created gas today when I was drinking all day? I know I'm going to have pain bc they just rearranged my insides but I'm just concerned about still being in pain and don't just want to take pain pills-I want it to go away! Do I need to pass more gas? Only have passed gas maybe twice today. Help!! Advice please!!

I found when I got home from the hospital it was another couple days before all those gas pains went away. Keep walking a lot! I got home on a Wednesday and by Friday I was all done taking pain medication. I did however keep using Gasx for a few more days. Also a heating pad on your belly really helps with the gas pains as well. Good luck and take care of yourself!

For me I couldnt stand the chair or the bed in the hospital!! I am 12 days post-op. My pain was bad in hospital too. It has gotten better each day. for past two days have only needed the pain med at night and Im trying not to take it tonight because it has constipated me terribly. I had to call my surgeon today beacuse i was miserable earlier. Someone said get some mineral oil and I read up on it and it said it can interfer with Vitamin absorption so i decided to call doc and he told me to take 1/2 bottle of Magnesium Citrate instead and it did the trick.

Actually I found that the more I walk the less the pain once I stop. So just stay strong because it does get better. Like the previous posts.....WALK WALK WALK AND THEN WALK. that was my surgeons last words before I left hospital. Good luck.

I think if you are at home you should try walk every couple of hours! I'm still in hospital and I have leg pampers on. I walk 1x per hour.

I think it's great that you are sleeping well,

*i meant "leg pumpers" !!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
