Need private insurance advice

Recommended Posts

I'm currently looking for an insurance plan that'll cover the bariatric surgery in Virginia. The only one I'm having any luck with is Anthem BCBS. Their website says they exclude it, but I was told in order to get the surgery I would have to get a rider. Does anyone on here know of other insurances in Virginia (other than Aetna, not covered in my area) that'll cover the surgery or can tell me your experience with Anthem in what you had to do or how much your rider was. Thank you.

I have BCBS of Texas, thru a small group policy and it specifically excludes any coverage for WLS or complications. I've never found an individual policy that will cover it. Our State pool plan did a few years back but they eliminated the coverage before I could apply.

Generally, I think your best bet is being on a group health policy - 50 or more employees, not a small group plan.

After ten years of talking and thinking about it, I'm finally going ahead with self pay.

Wishing you all the best.

I'm in Idaho and have Blueshield (BC and BS are separate here). I was not able to find any carrier that offered any kind of individual policy (rider or major medical) that covered WLS. I think if you live in a state that has opted out of WLS, a group policy is the only way you will get coverage. I Ended up going self pay at Obesity Control Center in TJ last December. Best money I ever spent. Good luck....hope you figure things out.

I have a friend who is considering the surgery in VA and she is lucky to be in a Kaiser service area. They cover it and she got her insurance through healthcare.gov. Good luck! I have Anthem BCBS through the state and they cover it as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
