Ulcers found in my endoscopy pre-surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi, New to the board and have been a lurker. Today I had my pre-surgical endoscopy preformed, and the GI Dr found a few ulcers. He has me on a PPI to take 30 minutes before dinner. I am afraid that I won't be able to get my sleeve done, it is scheduled for 2/6/15. Did anyone else have this issue?

I didn't have ulcers. They found out I have a hatial hernia. That will be removed when I have my sleeve on 12/10/14

I've not heard of ulcers stopping surgery. Hopefully you can get them healed before February. Try not to stress about them as stress can make them worse. I too had a hiatal hernia that was repaired during surgery. They cannot be removed. I didn't even know I had it, but I guess they just stitch it up. You might want to google ulcers and VSG or check out you tube. Very informative!! Good luck!

I forgot to ask my surgeon when I met him, if I'm found to have a hernia will it be removed at the same time as sleeving and not as a separate surgery? Is this right?

Yes and they don't remove them. They actually stitch it up. :) painless for me.

I had 2 ulcers discovered during my preop endoscopy and found out I have celiac disease. My gastro doc wouldn't give me clearance for surgery until they healed and I did another endoscopy but this was just my experience all doctors have their own way of doing things. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

Is this about a hernia, if so major weight off my mind, I have not had any pre op tests yet but that is something I've been worried about, that if I do have a hernia it will be a separate operation fixing it

@@NaomiAus, For clarification, as the above poster explained, hernias of any kind (hiatal, ventral, umbilical) can not be removed. The bulging through the weakened area is stitched up and sometimes mesh is used as a reinforcement prior to stitching for hernias that are located in central abdominal area.

Any reputable bariatric surgeon will repair a hiatal hernia if one is discovered during sleeve surgery, because that type of hernia causes reflux and can cause complications after surgery if left unrepaired. Any other type of hernia that is located lower in the abdomen will not be repaired; that would be a seperate surgery.

@@Elizabethe Glickel, many people have ulcers and are unaware of them. The ulcers should be completely resolved before surgery to prevent complications such as a leak.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
