Will I feel up to cooking Christmas dinner 9 days post op?

Recommended Posts

I think you will be fine. I had to cook 6 days post op for my daughter's birthday and it was fine. Just pace yourself and start early enough to give you enough time.

I think so too...do as much prep as you can the days leading up to the big day...

I am not trying to be negative Nelly since everyone's respons is so positive, however I did want to share with you that some of us don't recover that quickly.

Nine days postop I was still very weak and unable to do much. Hopefully, I am dead wrong and your recovery will be quick!

However, I am posting this just to suggest that you be prepared for a backup just in case.

Happy holidays and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Everyone recovers differently. I returned to work 4 days after surgery.

I agree with Kathy812. I'm 3 weeks out and I think I recovered pretty well, but 8 days out I was in no condition to host and cook a large dinner party. Lifting things and bending were the biggest issues. If there are things you can prep prior to surgery definitely do that and enlist help. You just had surgery, this is the time to be pampered a little!! ;)

Best of luck!!

When I first read this I was 3 days post op and was like heck noooo! But now I am 10 days post op and have been back to work all week. I'm sure I would be tired, but I could do a Christmas dinner.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
