Feeling disappointed and unsure

Recommended Posts

I've been researching the gastric sleeve surgery for years, I was never able to get the surgery because my insurance did not cover the surgery. FINALLY, I have insurance that covers the procedure...I been super excited (and a little nervous) since I found that out. I finally found a surgeon, made the appt for consultation. during the appointment I tell the PA that I want the gastric sleeve and she tells me that because I am diabetic the gastric bypass is what I need....I want to cry. I have done years of research watched a million YouTube videos...read plenty of articles but allll about the sleeve...not bypass. I honestly don't know that I want the bypass...don't know a whole lot about it. I understand the procedure but that is about it. I feel like Inhave to start all over again. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Should I override the PA's recommendation and choose the sleeve anyway...I mean she is the professional...I don't know what to do....any suggestions would be appreciated ????

Talk to the surgeon, see what he recommends. If your diabetes is weight relatable, you can "cure" it with the sleeve, too, it just won't be instant.

I was highly pre-diabetic, but by the time I finished my pre-op diet, I was out of the prediabetes zone. Mine was 100% because I was fat and eating badly. Check out your WHY and then decide.

I was diabetic for 4 years and had the sleeve surgery done around 2 months ago. The surgeon told me my diabetes would go away in 4 days; it went away in 2 days! My co-morbidities, fatty liver and sleep apnea will be gone in 3 - 4 months after surgery. Don't worry about what that person said! Go for the sleeve.

Are you insulin dependant? If so then I think bypass may be the way to go

Your surgeon and the PA can only provide you with the available options based on what they feel is best. The ultimate decision is really yours and what @@LipstickLady said is completely right. Gain insight into your own diabetes. Is it type I? Is type 1 from juvenile diabetes? How many meds (pills and insulin shots) are you taking to manage your disease. All of those things are what factors into their recommendation for the type of WLS best suited for you. Feel empowered and be empowered by speaking with the surgeon and asking questions. You can do this!

No...I am on metformin though...

I'm on metformin as well and my doctor recommended the sleeve. I would discuss it with your doctor further. Good luck

Talk to your surgeon. Remember a PA is not an expert on bariatric surgery, your surgeon is. Also a PA is not a doctor but a physician assistant, Just a step above an RN. I'm not knocking PA, I love mine, and I'm a nurse myself. This is just my opinion.

Look into a second or third opinion if necessary. You need to be with a surgeon and staff that you are comfortable not someone who isn't going to listen to you.

It was only a suggestion. Do what you want. They'll support you or lose your business.

I had my sight on the sleeve, had done all the research and preparation for the sleeve but when I met with the surgeon he highly recommended the bypass because of my long history of acid reflux and my hiatus hernia. If the sleeve does not give you the results you want you can always have a revision, for me I only want to do this once so I am having the bypass next week with the repair of the hernia. Good luck, the decision is yours to make. Talk to the surgeon himself and see what he recommends.

Type I or Type II diabetes? I had Type II. Was insulin dependent for almost 3 years. 150 units of Levemir per day plus Janumet twice a day. Sleeved on 11/17/14 and am no longer on any

insulin.

The sleeve is the way to go, faster recoup time, less cutting...get another opinion,..my doctor is a Bariatric spec....check the internet in your area or within a few miles, this procedure is getting popular.

Do your research on the bypass just as u did the sleeve then decide and it is your decision not the PA not the Dr don't be bullied they aren't having the procedures or living with it after

I have just this hour left my surgeon , I too am diabetic , I am having the sleeve on the twenty second of this month, my surgery is at Duke Hospital, never have I had my surgeon say anything about not having the sleeve, in fact he encouraged it over by pass , I would talk with my surgeon if o were you and explain to them what you choose.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
