Icky Protein Drinks!

Recommended Posts

I am on day 2 of Protein Drinks and I am supposed to drink 3-4 drinks a day & can have one lean meal (3 oz lean Protein + 1 cup of vegetables). I have tried 2 flavors of the ready to drink Atkins Advantage (chocolate and the Mocha) and do not care for them. They leave an after taste and seem thick and milky (I never have been a milk person anyway). I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for me. I know everyone says it is a personal preference...but these drinks get sort of pricey when you drink one and want to throw out the others.

Here are the ones that I can to choose from:

Ready to Drink:

Atkins Advantage

EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control

Muscle Milk Light

Premiere Protein

Pure Protein/Pure Protein Plus

Isopure

In the Powder:

Bariatric Advantage HPMR

Muscle Milk Light

From the RTD the most popular on this forum are probably the premiere Protein and the Isopure. The isopure you can purchase just one bottle from GNC and that way you can try different flavors to see if you prefer one.

If you are preop make sure you don't buy too much. Every Protein Drink I liked preop I couldn't stand post op.

I will be 5 months out in 1 week and have tried them all. For me the GNC total lean premixed ready to drink was the best. It comes in 4/5 flavors and when you compare the size, 14oz bottles, its very economical compared to many of the others. it's only 170 calories and has 25 grams of Protein. I buy it by the case12 bottles] per and get an additional 50% off the 3rd case if I buy 2. Just join there GNC card program at no cost and you also get coupons for special pricing at GNC. To me the best Protein Drink out there.

It is a personal preference. For me I liked Muscle Milk Light - vanilla Creme, but I blended a banana into it in the blender.

I'm on day two also! But I am on a 2 week blended diet, alternating 800/1200 calories every other day. I use Protein added to milk, some yogurt, fat free sugar free pudding, banana and other frozen fruit no sugar added. I am also not a milk drinker...but the nestle non sugar chocolate powder actually is growing on me! Probably cuz I am starving... But does make me feel full! Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
