I just got my insurance approval for surgery on January 7! Anyone else around that time?

My surgeon is Dr. Eric Sommer at the New York Bariatric Group. I'll be having my surgery at Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

For other pre-oppers that are curious: I have UHC Oxford Freedom PPO. They approved me in 24 hours. I have a BMI of 53, no comorbitites.

My insurance required:

  • 6 Months Weight Loss Program with Doctor (no diet, I just weighed in)
  • Psychiatric Evaluation
  • BMI > 40 with no comorbidities or >35 comorbidities.

My bariatric center required:

  • Cardiac Clearance
  • Pulmonary Clearance
  • Mental Health Clearance
  • Dietary Evaluation
  • sleep Study
  • Endoscopy

After Approval:

  • PCP Clearance
  • 2 Hour Bariatric Class

Such wonderful news! There is a high that you get after you learn you've been approved that you just can't describe.

I had my last appt with the Dr and dietician today. They will call me when the insurance company approves or denies me. They told me it would probably take 1-2 weeks to hear from insurance. I wanted them to try to do surgery in December because my deductible has been met for this year. I might end up having to wait until January. If I get approved my surgery date should be close to yours.

I only lost a net of 5lb in my 6 month pre-op. I kept yo-yoing.

I just started my process with Dr Sommer.... I felt the office was warm and friendly.. How did everything go?.. Did you have to do a preopt diet?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
