HealthyNewMe 1,935 Posted December 2, 2014 I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who also lost quite a bit of weight (no WLS, just low carbing it). I was jokingly telling how how I've become so scatterbrain lately....... for example, I forgot to press "save" after adding a phone number to my phone contacts, and thus didn't have the number the next day when I needed it. We laughed, but then she quite seriously said that she had been experiencing similar "cognitive malfunctions".... like not being as sharp as she should be. She went on to say that she had researched that rapid weight loss causes fat loss in the brain as well, which according to her...... the brain has fatty tissue. My response to her was, "So, what you're telling me is that the SKINNIER I'M GETTING, the DUMBER I'M GETTING?!?!?!?" Just checking in with you all to see if any of you have noticed any difference, one way or the other, in your cognitive ability with weight loss...... NewLife'sGr8 241 Posted December 2, 2014 Yes, I've also experienced fog-brain from WL. The brain is almost 100% FAT, not just 'some fatty tissue". That's why it's important to get your fats in. Healthy, non-saturated fats are best but even a little animal fat has enzymes that benefit the brain. Omega3d fats are great & help feed cognitive function. L-Lysine also helps cognitive function
lisacaron 5,075 Posted December 2, 2014 @@HealthyNewMe you know I have this happen to me too often lately!!! The nutritionist at my last Dr. office told me it was from lack of carbohydrates. That it is necessary to eat them and have them in your diet though minimally they are very necessary.
