If you self pay.........

Recommended Posts

Do you have to have a referal from your doctor? Also, do you have to pay it all off at once?

I just had a diabetes screening today- that lovely glucose test. My doctor also sent me to a GYN for a bunch of tests, all came back fine. I still have to have a hormone test- last month, I couldn't have it done, because Aunt Flo paid her visit on time, instead of being late as usual. :cry I just feel like I am getting the run around from my doctor- all of my tests come back fine, I knew they would, and I am sure he did as well. I am so frustrated right now, I am about to give up hope. Sorry for being a downer, but I am tired of the long wait for a damn referral number from this doctor!

Thanks for your help. I gained another 10 pounds this month, and the doctor doesn't believe the Zoloft is the cause. :angry

I think it depends on the Doctor. Dr. Kuri works with a company for financing according to his website. There are other ways you might be able to get loans, even if you had to pay your doctor up front.

I think if you self pay you don't need a referral. Referrals are usually for insurance purposes. How long have you been fighting your doctor? It might be worth not paying for it to wait until he refers you, but on the other hand, it might be worth the money to you not to monkey around.

You don't need a referral if you self pay, but I would advise being patient. You would still have to have all of the same tests even as a self-pay. The tests are to make sure that you don't have another problem that is contributing to your obesity and that you are healthy enough for surgery. It's hard to be patient, I know, but if it saves you thousands of dollars, wouldn't it be worth it?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
