Conversion from lap band to gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

Has anyone started with a lap band and then converted to a sleeve? I have had the worst time with severe acid reflux with my band and have had to remove almost all the Fluid. I am hungry all the time consequently. I have had all the X-rays and examinations and am told my band looks fine. I also had a hiatal hernia repaired so that isn't the problem.

I had band 6.08 removed due to slip 10.12 "converted to sleeve". I am now scheduled for gastric bypass dec 8th! I have gained all my weight back and have a new surgeon. He feels it is hard to do a good sleeve after band due to scar tissue.

So this will be your 3rd surgery? What caused the slip?

Yes, my 3rd! Not sure what caused slip. I was having other medical problems (though i had lupus) and i was taking medication that i thought was causing my stomach probs only to find out band had slipped. My original Dr had relocated so i was forced to see another. He converted to sleeve 10.12 and kept telling me it was going to take longer to lose weight cause of the scar tissue. I only lost about 20lbs. Now 2 yrs later i have successfully gained most of my weight back. I talked to a friend that had band removed due to a faulty piece and went to her surgeon. He felt bands left too much scar tissue to make a sleeve small enough. He sent me for upper GI and found that i have a stomach that looks more like a pear not a banana! :)

I went from band to sleeve. Only two weeks post op for the sleeve. Yes doctor explained that due to a lot of scaring from the band that the weight loss will be slower, but still very successful. It's still a tool at the end of the day and depends on how you use it. However, I realised that I just couldn't live with the band anymore with the side effects. My doctor that did the sleeve stopped doing bands 4 years ago due to the side effects and higher complications. He said that there is a big difference between quality of life and he no longer wanted to promote the band. I don't regret anything ????

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
