Tips on how to be safe in Tijuana?

Recommended Posts

@@Sandyryan I am filing my travel plans with the US Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which you can do online once everything is booked and planned. I know it is probably going overboard, but I am a meticulous planner when I travel. And hey, better safe than sorry. Here is the link:

https://step.state.gov/step/

I am also going to download the MagicJack app (another poster suggested that in one of my other posts she is a GENIUS!) so I can stay in touch with my family and friends and be in communication with them daily- or as much as I want.

Other than that, I plan on not going out and about alone (A Lighter Me has escorts, so that is a big plus!).

Also, remember to pack a small, cross body purse. I went to NYC this summer and brought a big tote. The tote was handy for the airport travel portion of the trip, but when I was walking around with just my wallet and phone in it while sightseeing, I was nervous because someone could have easily dipped their arm in and stolen my suff. Heh heh...live and learn!

Safe travels!

Also, just to throw it in there, it really helps me when I have all of my plans in one place on my person. I usually print out my flight itinerary, car rental (if I have one), hotel confirmation and any other confirmation documents. I also look up local taxi phone numbers and other helpful phone numbers and have them on a sheet. Then, I put it all in a brightly colored folder and stick it in my carry-on. I cannot tell you how many times having my confirmation had been handy when dealing with a hotel losing my reservation or any other snafu.

I also just downloaded TripIt which is a free itinerary app on my phone and it keeps all that stuff electronically as well. I just started using it on my most recent trip last week and it was nice! I didn't have to use my paper folder once. It stores all hotel, car and other confirmations right on my phone- so I will not have to pull out my red file folder anymore :)

I wore a hoodie with a zip pocket when I traveled - I had my passport, phone, and id in there. I also photo-copied everything and put it in my carry-on bag.

Honestly, I wasn't too worried for my safety. I didn't leave the hotel other than going to and from the airport and hospital. I know things are going on in Mexico but things go on here as well. There wasn't any point in the trip where I felt my safety was at risk.

Tijuana is very safe. You shouldn't have anything to worry about. On top of that you will not be sight seeing. The most you would leave the hospital/clinic for is that some coordinators will take patients shopping. That's about it. Otherwise you won't be leaving the building until it's actually time to leave.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
