Migraines and bypass surgery

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on the 23rd. I meet with my surgeon on the 15th and meds are at the top of my discussion list , as well. Tylenol doesn't work for me either and I worry about rebound headaches with Tylenol.

Let's hope we both get s answer that its something that works. Good luck. So close to Christmas for your surgery how long do you have to stay in the hospital?

They tell me I'll either be discharged late Christmas day or the day after. It was that or wait another week and I decided I wanted to get it done. :)

I also have had Migraines for several years, nearly daily for the past four years now. I'm concerned about what pain meds I'll be able to take post -op since ibuprofen meds can cause ulcers. Any ideas?

The Topamax, Imitrex and Botox are not anti-inflammatory medications so they are not in the class of Ibuprofen. If you only get headaches once in a while Tylenol may be a choice if your Doctor agrees or a daily preventative medicine with a as needed medication that is not a anti inflammatory. Congrats on your surgery

I was really worried about this. My Migraines are triggered by stress, weather, and food. When I drop out the carbs and focus on Protein that really helps.

My doctor said that the rapid melt zomig would not be contra indicated. I'm 9 days out and so far so good.

I had Migraines more often then not before RNY and took Topamax daily & a suppression med if I had a beak thru Migraine.

I have found that since the surgery I very rarely get a headache & that Tylenol takes care of the 2 I have had in the 3 months since I had the surgery.

I hope that everyone is so lucky.

I hope I am that lucky as well. I hate migraines. They are by far one of the most evil things ever. There other evil things with it but it ranks up there with them.. Congrats on being 3 months out.

My Migraines are better post op but I do have Botox and use maxalt for the occasional Migraine. Maxalt is not a NSAID so it's fine for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
