Migraines and bypass surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am a fellow Migraine suffer who has Migraines 25 days out of the month. I'm due to have surgery dec 15th. I was just wondering if anyone else suffers from migraines and if they have noticed a difference in them. Better or worse.. I am currently in medicated due to not being able to find one that works for them. And I have tried everything.. Thanks in advance.

I have had Migraines for about 30 years. I have found that Topiramate, generic to Topamax, has helped me tremendously. It is taken every day and the dosage is based on you. My migraines have been gone for the last year, although I have had two episodes due to barometric changes in the last two months. It is hard to say if the surgery helped or it was just finally time for them to be gone. Wishing you luck, it's no fun.

Hi there fellow Migraine sufferers! I too had them very bad prior to surgery, about 5 days per week consistently. As soon as I started my Liquid Protein diet they improved greatly and I did not have one for almost 6 weeks. I had my surgery on 9/29, I have had 3 headaches since then. My neurologist believes it has everything to do with our high Protein low carb diet. The 3 headaches I have had occurred during a really bad cold and were triggered by a sinus issue. It is still pretty early for me to tell but I would tell you they have improved greatly. It has been one of the best benefits of the surgery so far. Migraines suck as you know!

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time. I guess I just got lucky with the Topamax or it was just time for the darn things to almost go away. Had one for 4 days a month ago and then For 2 days over my right eye about 2 weeks ago. Back on a low dosage, but that has been it for about a year. food was one of my triggers before so eating properly has helped. Good luck in your adventure and great success.

I have been using Topomax daily along with propanol as a preventative. Up until my surgery they really did not do much for me. However I had a rescue shot called DHE that worked 75 percent of the time when I use them. I also had another when the headache was so severe that it could send me to the er. That shot was called Ketorlac. I have only used that a couple times now since my surgery in late sept. I am now weaning off propanalol and once I am done with that I will finish weaning off Topomax. I will then just use my rescue DHE as needed when I get a Migraine. I can no longer take the Ketorlac because it along with other meds caused stage 3 kidney disease. The way I understand it, Migraines are hereditary and when u are overweight it can really trigger them and make them worse. I am hoping between that and going through menopause mine will soon come to an end forever. They suck! I actually have arthritis in my jaw from so many years of suffering with them. Now my son and 10 year old Grandaughter get them. She is not overweight at all. In fact might be the opposite.

Hi...I was a fellow Migraine sufferer. After trying multitudes of medications over 25+ years, I was finally put on Topamax. It decreased my Migraines, but I still had 4-5/month. I had RNY gastric bypass on 5/27 and I haven't had a single migraine since!! I was weaned off my high dose Topamax before surgery. Oh, I get an occasional headache (not migraines), and it's always because I haven't had enough water--and it is relieved by drinking more Water. What a relief, just one of the many advantages of surgery. Good luck to you!

@@Djmohr my daughter gets them and she isn't over weight. She only gets maybe one a month. If that sometimes. The whole side of my moms side of the family from my grandparents down to my aunts and sister n cousin suffer with them as well. Mine and a aunts seems to be the worst out if the bunch suffering daily. I've heard of the dhe but my insurance don't cover it. :( and its 300 for them which is money I don't have right now though.. Glad to hear you are able to come off of your medications though. Best of luck to everyone who suffers from them and is able to find something that works for them

My skinny granddaughter has inherited my Migraines and she is only 16. This has been going on for a while now. At least I waited until I was 30. 6 days in the last year plus is not bad compared to monthly/weekly. Glad others have had success with Tooamax. Have not heard of DHE. Hopefully the surgery will give you some relief.

Hi, I am a fellow Migraine suffer who has Migraines 25 days out of the month. I'm due to have surgery dec 15th. I have suffered from Migraines for years and have tried many medications. Right now I am on Topamax 50mg twice a day and Botox injections once every three months. The Botox has made a huge difference in reducing my headache days. I also have Imitrex for breakthrough Migraines. I found I had more headaches after surgery but I'm due for the Botox and I think stress is a trigger for me. I'm 6 weeks out so hopefully long term things will settle down so I can come off the Topamax especially. Good luck on your surgery and things will fall in to place.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
