Drinking with a straw

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My surgery was 10 days ago, and I know im not supposed to be drinking through a straw. But I keep forgetting! I'm just so used to using a straw, especially if I go out and get a Water from a restaurant or somewhere they always give me one. Is this a big deal? Has anyone else used straws?

I use a straw most of the time. I seem to get less air in my tummy that way. Doesn't mKe sense to me, but that's how it is.

I drink with a straw too with no problems. My surgeon never said anything about using or not using one. In fact, now that I think about it I used one in the hospital and was never advised against it. I know I've seen on here other people say their Drs say not to use one, I'm not sure why though.

They just told us that it could increase gas / discomfort. I'm uncomfortable in general at the moment, and it doesn't seem to matter which way I go, lol. Honestly I think for those of us that tend to be gulpers, straws are probably the lesser evil.

I always drink with a straw. I couldn't get any Fluid down just sipping until one day about 2 weeks post-op I accidentally drank an entire cup of juice because it came with a straw in it. Since that point I always use a straw and the few times I don't I inevitably end up with air bubbles in my stomach and esophagus.

used to using a straw

@@alyssadietrch

all docs are different

your doc told you no to straws :(

supposed to listen to him kiddo

my doc also nixed straws

i think the no straw rule has something to do with carbonation/gas

there is an expression on the board "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

you might be able to drink successfully with a straw

but per your doc (and many others) don't use that nasty straw

good luck

kathy

I can only drink from a straw, it gives me control. When I drink with out the straw.. I find myself gulping.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
