African American Hair (and loss)

Recommended Posts

I would say the best way to prevent hair loss is to promote Hair growth. Here is a video to do so using the inversion method. I like this video but the only thing I would change is to heavily message the scalp WHILE your inverted. Good luck!

I may try Hairfinity. Great info everyone. The pros outweigh the cons. I would rather welcome the regrowth of hair than the return of pounds & an unhealthy lifestyle. Blessings to everyone!

Hairfinity is just Biotin and a multi-Vitamin combined. Most hair pills are. Some also have collagen in them. As a sleeved patient you're already going to be taking multi-Vitamins which Biotin needs to be effective. Also the pill are huge! Much larger than what will be comfortable to take with your sleeve. Just some biotin and take that.

I have locs and have been for 5½ years. I was already taking biotin since I'm menopausal and have continued to do so post op. 3mths in and so far I haven't noticed any Hair loss. Hair loss occurs when you don't get enough Protein so one way to ensure you don't have hair loss is to meet your Protein goals.

Sometimes you just get Hair loss. My Protein intake is good and my hair still thinned.

Janeta16....... Unbraid that hair! Most of us will get hair loss..... The good news, it starts coming back in around 8-9 months post-op. Braiding, pony tails etc will weaken the hair shafts. We need to put as little stress on our already fragile hair as possible. Let it breathe. I was more upset over the way my hair looked that anything. It made me look so OLD!! It's coming back now, but not fast enough for me. Good luck, sweetie!!

The sad truth. Is that it is a complete lottery, I'm mixed race and had hair for days, started losing about 3 months out and has only just started to slow, I've had to have it cut as it was dramatically thinner - the shortest it's been since 1986!

I had my Protein intake and all the suitable Vitamins and started taking Biotin too and it just happened. Am I traumatised? hell yes, am I going to get over it? hell yes

Would I trade 6.5 stone lost for the hair? Honestly, I would say there were moments, if your hair has been your trademark for your entire life, longer than any weight gain, then it's hard but it's growing again and my "thin" hair, as with most non-Caucasian hair, is still thick

I am now 10 months out..

If you know hair types, I am a 3c/4a. I started losing my hair around the 3rd month and now again recently. Over the holidays I slacked off on everything so I just started on my Biotin and Vitamins.

I have a head full of hair (way more than my profile picture) so the only way you can tell is when I point it out. There are Patches of hair that are about 3-4 inches long and the rest of my hair is in the middle of my back when stretched. Luckily, I wear it curly.

The Biotin and Vitamins work. Theres no need to do anything else. And I had my hair braided - all of the hair that didn't shed daily came out all at once when I took my braids out. It really didn't matter.

So, do you want to shed daily or all at one time? It was a bit more scary and shocking all at one time..LOL

Team natural too for a long time. My hair is so thick and kinky, I would welcome some shedding!!! Lol

I read the shedding after this surgery is inevitable due to the change happening in our bodies and it's nothing we can take or do to change that. How much we lose will vary person to person. It said taking Vitamins like Biotin will not stop the hair from shedding, but will help it grow back once the shedding has stopped.

I'm pre op so I haven't started my shedding stage, but when I do I just plan to keep it clean and moisturized. I'll wear my weaves and get over it lol.

Hi, I'm four months out today. I have enough hair on my head for two people but worried about Hair loss. I've been natural for almost three years. I take Biotin and try to get in Protein and Water (no so good on either the past few days). So far, my hair loss has been minimal. My sister has been using the LOC method for her hair, liquid (water), Oil and Conditioner (leave in thick pudding type). I started doing this and my hair feels fabulous. At night I spritz it lightly, add some African Prise oil or coconut oil then a glob of African Pride leave -in conditioner. Then I twist my hair up in a bunch of two-strand twist, or do two flat twist pigtails. Cover with my sleep cap and good to go. In the morning, I untwist , add some coconut oil and I'm off. Hope this helps. It's keeping the moisture in to promote healthy strands.

Thank you for asking this questions. I can't find info on African American hair and WLS anywhere. I've been natural for almost two years have worked hard to grow my hair and I want to keep it lol.

I have not had any hair loss at almost four months out from surgery. I decided to loc my hair about two months after surgery and for me that has been a great decision. My hair is growing like its never grown before since I'm not constantly messing in. I have been completely natural for the past three years though so for me, this was as much about growing my hair as having a change to go along with my weight loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
