Fighting the blues and worry

Recommended Posts

Today is day 8 Post OP, yesterday was the 1st day I was able to eat on my list of acceptable things is cottage cheese, my book says I would only be able to handle 1 or 2 bites, I ate nearly half a tub, and did not get sick, not that I wanted to get sick, but the fact that I was able to eat that much worries me a bit and I feel bad for not stopping myself I knew I had, had more than I should have, but I have been on liquids Since Oct 18 and it was so stinkin good. Now I am worried that even when my band gets filled I'm not going to feel the fullness. I am also a feeling a bit depressed, I don't know if it's the weather, I haven't been able to return to my previous exercise routine, my family isn't helping with the house they are simply waiting for me to feel better...... blah blah blah and a big sigh.

Hi there and congratulations on having the surgery in the rear view mirror. You are doing great! I could eat that much in cottage cheese, too, and you know what? Your body probably needed that. Don't worry! When your band is adjusted properly (remember, this is the whole idea of an adjutable lapband procedure) it will feel very differently. Take it easy, thank yourself -- you've done an amazing thing.

Don't worry - when you start getting your adjustments, things WILL be different. However, I caution you to really practice your eating now. My mouth (teeth, cheeks, tongue) were and still are so practiced at shoving food down, that I sometimes swallow bites that are too big without even thinking about it. It just happens. Practice. :)

Hang in there and take it easy.

Me, too, on the inhaling -- I did practicing on the clock one bite one minute. Hardest thing was putting the utensil down. Didn't want to let my weapon go, lol. I still have to be mindful but it is easier with time. New habits finally.

The funny thing I have found, is that wait staff in restaurants seem to notice when I lay my utensil down and im waiting between bites. They keep coming over and asking if everything's okay. Lol

that's hysterical about restaurant staff!

One of the things that I am also 'amused' by is that for the most part, most people say to practice mindful eating, not sitting at the TV or whatever, but our dining room table is small. I'll set my boys up at the table, hubby sits on the couch, and I find myself at my desk a lot (we have a linear open floor plan kitchen->dining->living room). I find that if I take my half cup of whatever and sit at my desk, check FB, answer an email, read things here, etc., I actually space out my bites.

@@amponder sorry about the blues. I have been *mostly* ok since my surgery, but I have had a couple of really hard moments, so I get it. I guess I would just say, be gentle with yourself, lots and lots of grace (we are not going to change over night. If we could, we would have done it already!). Lots of good vibes sent your way. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
