JaneJaneDoe 81 Posted November 29, 2014 I know I've been told I will take synthroid for the rest of my life. But I came across a blog (cannot remember the blog URL) that said their thyroid levels became normal and they were able to stop taking their hypothyroid Rx. It got me wondering if others have had this experience.
amazon 579 Posted November 29, 2014 That's interesting. I'm on synthroid too. My levels will be checked again later this month, but one month post op I didn't need the dose adjusted. It would be AWESOME to come off it, but my expectations are that I'll remain on it. I'm on it because I had Grave's disease and they nuked too much of my thyroid. But I was 100+ lbs overweight at the time. So I guess there's hope that at a normal weight it would be ok. Maybe that's how folks end up coming off it? McButterpants 2,846 Posted November 29, 2014 I stopped my thyroid meds 2 weeks prior to surgery thru 2 weeks post-op when my doc told me to start taking them again. My levels are back to where they need to be. My docs concern is my nodules - we don't want them to get bigger.
Momonanomo 534 Posted November 29, 2014 My endocrinologist, who was actually the one to bring up WLS with me in the first place, said I will always be on thyroid medicine. Seems once you take it for awhile you HAVE to. Anyways, that being said, as my weight has gone down he has lowered my dose. It would have been nice to completely be free of medicine, but apparently it doesnt work like that with the thyroid
ProjectMe 909 Posted November 29, 2014 Definitely not a possibility for those of us without a thyroid. I am a thyroid cancer survivor and will have to take synth roil for the rest of my life. The amount of synthroid depends on the weight of the person. I've lost 40+ lbs and my dosage decreased by 25mcg. Endocrinologist said he will need to decrease again when I lose another 10lbs. Lacowgirl72 210 Posted November 30, 2014 I was taken off thyroid medicine after surgery 7 months ago. I have had my levels checked 3 times and levels are normal. Hoping they stay that way.

Debbie3sons 1,936 Posted December 1, 2014 It's funny because I had taken synthyroid before my first son was born because I have had thyroid problems since I was 17 , but after I had my son 31 yrs.ago, they checked it then with my other 2 sons they checked it & took me off of it then right before surgery about 2 months some how it started acting up again , so I had to go back on it & I am still on it & yes my weight fluctuates , I want my last 40 lbs off but it will be a loss of 5 lbs one day , then that 5 comes back in 2 days but I can at least move now & I'm not tired all the time so I am SO much more happy now that I have lost my weight& inches in clothing sizes, so I guess my thyroid comes & goes but I am healthy ,so when I have to have a physical , I guess they will check the labs & I will find out then. Way back ten years ago when I was put on thyroid meds, the Dr. said some people take it their whole life, and some bodies just adjust naturally and they are able to go off it. Alumace 53 Posted December 1, 2014 I was told you won't stop after the op however as you loose weight there's a chance in lowering the dose or going off it.
sarina55 8 Posted December 3, 2014 i just restarted today... day 11.. because my butt was dragging... i thought it might be because of that.. see how i feel tomorrow.. i was hoping to stop taking them because I just started about four months ago but felt so tired today (worse than first week) that I didn't want to take a chance
juls0102 33 Posted December 3, 2014 I have Hashimotos and I'm hypothyroid. I was told not to take meds until 2 weeks post op. I started taking them after one week because I felt horrible. I switched from synthroid to Armour about a year ago. My endo didn't want to see me for at least 2 months after the surgery. I've lost 37 lbs so far, so I'm assuming my dosage will be lowered. I was also told I would be on meds for the rest of my life.
Lovebuggie 12 Posted December 4, 2014 I'm 7 months post op down 75 pounds. My doc has lowered my dosage twice already and says there's a slim chance of coming off of it completely.
