Maybe a subject that is TMI but one that I def need to discuss.

I am 10 days post op, have had no problems having a BM on my own (without the daily milk of magnesia my MD recommends) just having liquid bowel movements (eww that sounds horrible), I am thinking that is because I am still on a liquid diet, but at what point is it considered diarrhea if every bowel movement you have is liquid? Maybe if it increases in frequency?

Also I feel like I have had a couple of episodes of dumping syndrome, I ate broccoli cheddar Soup (well blended -- also I know not the healthiest selection but it was Thanksgiving and I wanted a soup that was actually tasty -- and my favorite) and immediatley after was hit with the very painful need to go to poop (which I did -- and then my soup was gone out the other exit) any thoughts on avoiding dumping?

When do you resume normal poops!?! I need to know hahah

Everybody's different, but this will go away. Maybe the Soup was too thick. If I'm going to have a thick soup, I thin it out with either chicken or beef bouillon. That way I don't inadvertently eat too much too fast.

I'm five days post op. I tried chicken broth for first time since the operation. It did the same thing your cheddar broccoli Soup did. It was so fast I would describe it as dumping. I plan on avoiding broth just for that reason. You might do the same with your soup. I'm sure it will get better. I read on this forum that our stomach is like a baby's now and we need to introduce food to it slowly. Makes sense to me. Good luck.

@@TNchick I had nearly the same issue for about 10 days post op, so hopefully you are nearing the end. The things I found that helped are introducing new things a little bit at a time and eating SLOW! I know it is hard to make 2 ounces of Soup last 25 minutes, but it does help. The first time I had broccoli cheddar soup instead of my regular cream of mushroom, I only ate about half an ounce and the rest was something I was already used to. Moving to the pureed stage and eating more Protein based foods helps a lot as well. Hang in there!

I am 8 weeks post op and only have diarrhea. I have it once in the morning and again once or twice at night. The bad part is the smell.. TMI I know but seriously it is bad like cat poop every time.. I feel like I need to get one of those huge commercial grade exhaust fans for the bathroom.. It even smells up the room attached to the bathroom and lingers for a good 30 minutes. Is it just me? My dr appt is next week so I'll find out but when I was in at my 2 week check up the nurse said some people never have normal poops again.

I wonder if it's the fat content of the Soups you are eating. During my all liquid phase I tolerated vegetable broth no problem. I would hope that your BM's normalize as you move closer to a regular diet.

My mom is 9 years post op and she she goes almost immediately after eating and the smell it terrible, but it is not dumping, it is just how her body works now.

I am 5 weeks post op and I am completely different. I have had pre-surgery normal consistency BMs, however they were only every other day. They have just this week started to be once a day again. The surgeon has now put on a stool softener daily to help regulate because I have been having some abdominal pain in my colon area.

Everyone is so different, your body may just work differently now.

@TNchick I had watery stools first two weeks, sometimes 2-3 times per day. Protein shakes gave me explosive diarrhea and I would go immediately after taking some. Then gradually it became less, like once a day or every two days but still loose. Today am Day 31 and first day of bad Constipation. So better keep milk of magnesia, am buying it today.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
