Recommended Posts

Hello guys....m new to this forum and I really need ur help!

I had my VSG on 24 nob and now I'm 4th day post op......the problem is though I'm supposed to take at least 48 oz of Water and other clear fluids as well, I can't seem to do it!!!

I don't fell like drinking or eating anything at all!! The most I can take is 20 oz of all the total fluids....plus I'm having problem with a lot of gas...every sip I take in seems to fill me up with gas and I just can't seem to get rid of it!!

I feel so miserable and afraid that I'm gonna get dehydrated soon....I just wanna cry!

I had a hard time getting fluids in at first. You literally have to sip Water nonstop. It gets easier, just keep trying. As for the gas, chewable Gas-X is my new best friend! When the gas is gone, you don't feel as restricted and you can drink more. Good luck!

@@Beanz Most people can't get 48oz in right off the bat. Just keep your Water with you at all times And sip even if you don't feel like it do it anyways! Put some flavoring in your water if it helps. I'm almost a month out and water is still harder for me to drink than say Protein Shakes, I don't know Why it just is. Do you like coconut water? If you do ask your surgeon if it's allowed....plain coconut WATER they sale it at Walmart. Coconut water is a super hydrator. I didn't have the gas but I used the extra strength gas strips, they dissolve on your tongue. I used them "just in case". drink! Set a timer if you need a reminder almost every phone has one! Good luck, keep your head up and keep at it, it will get easier as the days goes by! Oh and there's no crying in VSG land now cut that out! : )-

I had surgery on the 24th as well. What your experiencing is normal I think because I am having the same problem. Today is the first day that I've been able to drink without pain. Hot tea sweetened with spenda is going down the best. It is getting better. Hang in there.

Little known fact: Ghrelin (the hunger hormone produced mostly by the portion of your stomach that was removed during VSG surgery) is also the hormone that prompts you / your body to drink when it is thirsty.

But without ghrelin (your body isn't producing much/any right now) you won't feel that you're thirsty. So you have to force yourself to drink.

Maybe that will help a little ....

That first week it is hard to get all your Water and Protein in. All you can do is do the best you can. It gets sooo much easier the second week out. It felt so overwhelming at first thinking about getting 64 oz of liquids daily. I found it a little easier to drink watered down crystal light. Just remember that it does get better. I am almost 4 weeks out and I feel incredibly good and get all my requirements in with no problem. Good luck you can do this!

This might be something you want to try to kill two birds with one stone; its a drinkable Multivitamin that tastes pretty good (you add it to water). I'm thinking this is the thing I'm going to make and sip nonstop with the help of my new best friend, Mr. Gas X.

I know what you mean about water feeling heavy. Whenever I'm sick or have a sore throat, water is extremely uncomfortable for me to pass. Gatorade always went down much better/lighter.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
