10 days post op with a lot of questions

Recommended Posts

First of all let me start off by saying that I had the surgery on the 18th. I have yet to get in my liquids or Protein. I drink Water pretty much all day, but get pain in my stomach after every sip. I was having really bad reflux and called the doc and he told me to take the prilosec at night and in the morning. Then I have pain and a really uncomfortable feeling in my lower stomach on the left side if I sit for a long period of time. Therefore lying down has been comfortable for me. And I'm still experiencing gas pains in my left shoulder and really funny because it feels like they are in my lower back also. I have been walking everyday, but afterwards I feel very weak. Sorry for such a long post but I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing any of these same things. On the good side I have lost a total of 17lbs in 10 days!!!!

Well done on the weight loss! I think everything you are experiencing is normal. in addition to all the Water you are taking in be sure to get up as often as possible and walk, walk, walk it will help a lot with getting things moving. I think as long as you are sipping wour Water you should be good, I did notice in the hospital it was easier for me to drink without a straw, I seemed to be taking in too much air when I had the straw, so that might help.

I was on a med for heartburn/acid reflux after surgery for 6 months, I am happy to say after the 6 months I no longer needed that, I probably could of stopped it sooner but I was just following what my doc perscribed. Energy will come back but it does take a little while. You are doing great!

Have you tried things besides Water? Are you drinking Protein Shakes? I couldn't tolerate plain water or artificial sweeteners for 3-4 months. I drank a lot of skim milk, diluted fruit juice, diluted pedialyte, diluted Vitamin water, etc. And warm liquids like Decaf herbal teas and cream Soups and broth with unflavored Protein Powder added were life savers. I had to sip from the time I woke up until I went to bed to even get close to 64oz. For other people, cold things worked better. SF popsicles or even frozen Protein Drinks might work.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
