GAINING weight first week post-op? What's happening?

Recommended Posts

STARTING WEIGHT (256.6)

I went on a 10 day pre-op diet with which I lost 16 pounds. My 5th day post op I had reached 28 pounds lost. On the 26th I had gone back to 236 pounds. My coordinator with whom I still speak with has told me that it can be excess Water. I'm in my second week post op. What should I be drinking/doing to see some significant weight loss?

PLEASE HELP ME!

Follow your plan and what your team has instructed you to do. What you should do right now is just focus on recovering. You just had surgery and your body has gone through a lot of trauma. Everything will even out. Don't stress, stay off the scale, drink your fluids, Protein ect... You will be just fine!

I'm 14 days post-op and my scale has been bouncing up and down a bit, but I know that it's bloat due to my upcoming menstrual cycle.

Just keep following the rules and hang in there. Your body is still in freak out mode.

Your body has been traumatized and pumped with bags of IV fluids. Focus on following your post-op nutrition guidelines and begin taking short walks a couple of times per day. It will take many days for your body to dump all of that Fluid. Don't torment yourself, stay off of that scale!

Dont worry about numbers. I know thats easier said than done. You should start to notice clothes getting baggier and moving around is easier. The scale will go up and down. If you have a $hitty scale it may depend how you stand on it. They weight will come off. Stick to your nutritionists plan.

It'll come off! Your body is adjusting. I didn't lose any weight my first week po.

I agree with everyone. I didn't lose weight when I first came home. It took a good week to ten days before the weight started coming off. You have Fluid from the IVs which is normal. Same thing happened to me after my hysterectomy. Give it time, and focus on recovery. You will be amazed how your body will start to melt the fat away. Take care!

Yep, these posters are absolutely correct. I gained 5 pounds in the hospital from IV's and bloating. Took a week for the

gas and bloating and IV Fluid to dissipate. Now, at 18 days post, I have lost 24 pounds. It WILL happen.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
