I drank at least that many, maybe even double that, before my surgery. Didn't do a very good job of quitting prior. Haven't had one...not a drop...since my surgery on October 8. Don't really crave it. No real withdrawals that I can recall. I think if you take the surgery, and your lifestyle after, seriously, things like this (quitting pop) aren't too bad. Pop, fried foods, sugar, etc. are NOT options in my mind. So, I think that's helped me adjust and not crave them like I thought I might. Good luck to you.

HI there, I was also quite a caffeine addict with coffee. I told the dietitian straight out that I had no intention of giving up my caffeine until the last minute. About 6 weeks before surgery, she told me "it's the last minute, if you want to get cleared, then it's got to go." What I did was wean slowly over the course of about 3-4 weeks. I never had a caffeine headache and honestly was much easier than I thought.

Good Luck to you!

I drank soda right up to the day before surgery. I even had it at the hotel the night prior to surgery. After Surgery, I had no craving or desire for soda. I used to drank 2 2-liter diet cokes in one sitting with no problem. Now I'm spoiling myself if I have 4 ounces of OJ. Yes, I said OJ.

I drank more low calorie Gatorade than anything else. I also drink Water but I just don't drink enough of it. I know, bad habit.

Case in point, once your surgery is done, I highly doubt you'll have these cravings. Your attention will go to wanting to make sure you do everything right.

I wasn't addicted. Diet coke and one to two a day. Gave it up at the pre op one week diet.

I had to try it after one week out. The fizz was so powerful and the taste was not anything I found appealing. And YES your tastes change after surgery.

At 5 months I have tried a sip or two of a flat diet coke but even that's not good. I don't seek it out because it's a waste of money and there's nothing in it that's good for me

I keep my 20 oz tumbler with me with nugget ice and flavored Water.

I think you'll give it up just because it won't be the same!!! Which is a good thing.

I had to stop cold turkey (no pun intended on this Thanksgiving Day) about a year before surgery. I was having a really hard time of it with reflux and diverticulitis, and a endscopy showed that I had a severe inflammation in my stomach and esophagus. The doctor put me on a no caffein, acids, hot sauce etc. regime to help.it calm down before I got full-blown ulcers. It was hard for a few days, especially since there are other soda pop drinkers in the house. But I had to decide if it was worth the pain of stomach ulcers.

My biggest problem with giving up certain things is not that my stomach wanted that stuff, but my taste buds wanted it. The advantage to that now is that either it's the medications, or the ketosis, or something phisiologic about the change in out stomachs - food and drinks (for most of us) just do not taste the same post-op. Old favorites are blech! and new things are hmmmm not so bad.

If you can get past a couple of days, you should be alright. My guess is that as soon as you ditch the soda and cut back on starchy carbs, any bloat that you have will start to disappear. You just have to think differently to feel differently.

I have not had surgery, but I drink real cokes! I quit, not for the surgery part but what I read about drinking cokes scared me to death! They really are not good for you! Alzheimer's has not been proven, but seems to be found in people that are heavy drinkers of coke! What I found that works for the caffeine headaches was to take Advil Migraine or/and phenergrine! Good Luck!

It took me about a week of headaches to kick the Coke and Pepsi, two months ago. The only time I really miss it is when I go to the movies. I like to have popcorn and soda during a movie! I went this last weekend and had popcorn and Water. ;) YOU can kick the habit!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
