emcbee 6 Posted November 26, 2014 Hello! I have been lurking here for a few months and finally joined. I have my VSG scheduled for a week from today 12/3, and I am so incredibly nervous that I am really not sleeping. I am so scared of having a fatal complication during or after the surgery. I have never spent the night away from my youngest and I am nervous about that too. My question is, does anybody have any opinions about outpatient vs inpatient surgery? My surgery is scheduled at an outpatient center and apparently it is "outpatient" because they keep you for 23 hours and not 24? Reading through the forum, I am seeing a lot of people had stays of 3+ nights, so I am worried that my care will be compromised by having only the one night. I do not have any comorbidities, other than being on the low end of moderate sleep apnea. My surgeon required me to get a CPAP and I need to use that during surgery because she says it helps when coming out of anesthesia. At any rate, just saying hello and that I am a nervous wreck. :-)
CowgirlJane 14,260 Posted November 26, 2014 I stayed one night at outpatient center near a hospital. Great care, no sick people germs, no complaints.
hillgirly 228 Posted November 26, 2014 I stayed overnight at the hospital (through their outpatient center). Once I passed the leak test & kept some food down the following day, I was allowed to go home. Great care and had no problems.
emcbee 6 Posted November 27, 2014 Thank you for the replies! I hadn't thought of the bonus of no sick person germs! Everybody is this nervous the week before surgery, right? :-)
Kindle 8,667 Posted November 27, 2014 (edited) I stayed 1 night (discharged about 15 hours after surgery) at a surgical center. I specifically didn't want to be in a general hospital due to germs and the fact that the surgical center staff was bariatric specialized. I got one on one attention while I was there and had no problems going home that day. And yes, I nearly had a nervous breakdown 2 days before surgery, but was surprisingly calm and confident the day of. emcbee 6 Posted November 27, 2014 I think I'll be okay the day off because adrenaline will keep me going, but man alive these days before are tough!
unsupersizeme 43 Posted November 27, 2014 I was not scared or stressed at all. The odds of me dying of a heart attack or stroke in the future were much greater than me dying from the surgery. That's how I stayed positive.
