Help-Feeling very hungry after only 7 days post-op

Recommended Posts

I'm only 7 days post-op and I want to eat "real" food soooooo bad! The first couple of days I was satisfied with eating Soup, yogart, etc. but now I always feel hungry. I broke down yesterday and ate some popcorn (how awful) I made for my son. I chewed it really fine and I didn't have any pain after I ate it and that scares me b/c now I'm thinking what else can I eat? I know I'm supposed to do Full liquids for another week and then pureed, , but I don't think I can take it anymore. I'm freaking tired of soup, I want some food! Help!

Hey Dolphingirl. Were you at OCC? Mine was May 11th. Just curious if that was you next to me. ANYWAY, omg, I am right with you on the always feeling hungry comment. I have eatten thick stuff. No solids but thick stuff. It is so hard not to. I had the noodles in the chicken noodle Soup. It slid down. I'm worried that I am consuming too much!! June 2nd is my first meal and I swear a chicken breast on the grill will be a dream.

I hope someone responds to your thread!!

Just because you can eat it doens't mean you should. You are on liquids for a reason and that is to let your band seed in and heal up. They don't want things churning inside and that's why the liquids. When you eat things too soon, you are taking a chance of your band slipping. You need to blend things up so you are on liquids only. If you are still having problems, then call your doctor and ask him what you can have.

Hi Guys, I was in the same boat, call your Dr or Nutrtionist and ask what you can do. They may recommend a Protein Shake to help with the hunger. I just had my first fill 5/15 and what a difference it has made hang in there it gets better.

Good advice , Betty.....I think the same thing...I know it gets hard to just stick with the liquid, but you don't want to mess up your surgery....once you get to the pureed food, it won't be so bad...you will adjust ....and you will be so happy you did.....and please don't eat popcorn....that is one of the worst foods you could eat....it could get caught in your band....and then you are really going to have problems.....just remember...we have all been where you are, and we know the frustration....just keep yourself well hydrated....drink as much Water as you can and drink slim fast (optima) it really does curb the appetite...hang in there....and it will pass before you know it....

I know it's really hard not to want to scarf down everything you see right now -- I had no restriction at all about four days postop and had to (as many do) do 4 weeks of liquids -- that's what is referred to as "Bandster Hell". Call your doc or your nutritionist -- they can help!

I couldn't do the Protein shakes because the smell made me physically sick, even the premixed stuff, so my Nutritionist had me drink milk, which helped a lot - 8 grams of Protein in an 8 oz glass (skim or soy milk) and it did stay with me longer. I was drinking swiss miss diet hot chocolate and mixed it with the skim milk and had a LOT of cream of chicken Soup mixed with the milk. They even let me start eating cream of wheat the second week and what a difference -- 2 oz and I was full for hours!! That is what got me through, it was hard, make no mistake about it, but at least with some of the denser liquids the hunger was manageable. I asked for a fill at my 2 week postop visit because I was so hungry -- like before the surgery -- but I couldn't get a fill till I was six weeks out.

So, though this is really hard right now, you can get through it, just talk to your doctor or Nutritionist and get suggestions from them. They really will want to help you get through this and be successful!

Good luck!

HI,

I am 4 days post op and my stomach growls but as soon as I eat a little it goes away. I have been sticking with the liquids but it is really hard to not eat when everyone around you is! I feel your frustration. Betty thanks for the post about even if you doesn't mean you should.. education is the key to helping understand all the reasons behind the why we are liquidville.. I pureed up some cream of chicken Soup and some chicken broth with a few of the veggies from the chicken soup and it was warm and had taste which is great. I felt like I was eating something. Good luck and hang in!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
