Question - I am looking in to getting banded - but had gallbladder surgery 32 yrs ago when they still cut you open to remover your gallbladder - does anyone know if that would interfer with getting banded.

Also, what is sliming bping ??

Thanks,

Your prior gallbladder surgery will NOT interfere with lap banding. Some people develop adhesions after surgery but surgeons can easily work around or through that (I'm an RN).

PB is productive burp. If you have an inflated band and don't chew enough or if something gets stuck, the esophagus starts to produce a lot of mucus (slime) in response to get things moving. Sometimes the food goes down and sometimes it comes up... productive. Because the food does is not in the lower part of the stomach, it does not mix with stomach acids so it differs from "traditional" vomiting.

Thanks Elisabeth !!!

Another dumb questions - i can see by your signature that you are getting filled ever few months - what happens to the sailene (sp) that they fill the band up with - does it evaporate and that's why people have to keep getting re-fills :0).... Thanks.

Over time there is some evaporation of the saline. My surgeon is conservative and does not give large volume fills so I worked my way up to restriction. As you lose fat around the band, you'll need more fill (saline) to maintain a full feeling after eating.

Some people feel restriction from the time they are banded. Most need to get fills from time to time to help control the volume of food they eat. I am finally at the point where I can eat "normal" portions of food and have averaged about 1.5 pounds lost a week.

I just asked that same question of the staff at my surgeons office this morning. They too said that the previous gallbladder surgery won't be anything to worry about.

I get my band tomorrow !!!

Congrats on getting banded - I go in for my 1st consultation 5/31 - but am shocked to learn that my doctor (the only one here in the Palm Springs Area) charges and additional $6000 up front for after care that's not covered by insurance - that's going to be $9,600 out of pocket for me. Thanks a big number.... I wil go to the 1st visit and see what's up.

Again - Prayers to you for a speedy recovery.... Janet

Thanks Elisabeth - I go 5/31 for my 1st consulation w/the Docter here in the Desert (Palm Springs area) - but I am shocked to find out that he charges $6,000 up front for care that's not covered by insurance - like 2 week prior to surgery liquid diet - he provides the shakes - fills etc (why aren't fills covered by insurance??) I will see what's up then .. Thanks for your help... I really appreciate it.. Most people i know had the rny but i just feel that's too risky. I don't want to loose my hair :(. I don't know of anyone who is banded but you on these boards. So you guys are my only soucre of info.

Thanks Again

Janet

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
