Hi I'm new and I don't like the consistency of puréed foods

Recommended Posts

I am on my fifth month of the diet phase and I understand that I have to be on soft and puréed foods after the surgery. The problem is that I don't like the consistency of regular foods blended up into a purée. Are there any suggestions or helpful hints to get through this phase?

Hey J,

Trust us when we say, by the time you reach that stage after your surgery, you most likely will have a new appreciation for the puréed stage. I remember just how good cram of wheat and things like puréed lentil Soup tasted!

I didn't puree anything. There were plenty of other options at that stage for me that didn't require me sticking regular foods in a blender (gross!), such as yogurt, cottage cheese, pudding, Protein Drinks, refried Beans, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc. Don't worry, you will find ways to get creative! The pureed stage actually went by very fast for me. I am on soft foods now and was surprised at how many choices I have including crackers!!

I really don't get the differences among Surgeons regarding the diet. I celebrated 6 weeks post op today and I have never been on puréed foods. As of today I can eat anything, slowly with bites the size of s marble. My diet was restricted to eggs, toast, flaky fish, soft cooked vegetables etc but never puréed. I feel really badly for someone 5 months out who hasn't eaten anything solid yet!

I'm with you, ready2B! I didn't puree anything either because the thought of eating "normal" food that was made into the consistency of paste made me wrinkle my nose. I chose the route of just chewing the daylights out of anything that wasn't naturally the consistency of yogurt, and I was ok.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
