Rumbly Stomach...Why?

Recommended Posts

I know that after vsg (or all wls) our stomachs tend to turn into rumbly, grumbly, talkative little monsters...I and my entire office is listening to mine right now!

I know it is common...but I am curious as to what the physiological reason might be. My tummy was as silent as a lamb before surgery...but now? It is definitely found it's voice!

Anyone know why this is so common?

So, when we had our surgeries the portion that was taken out contained the hormone called Ghrelin. After time Ghrelin will come back, doctors have not figured out why right after surgery and the months following it stops. It comes back, so this Ghrelin is that gurgling sound you hear. So, basically when your stomach is empty this hormone takes action triggering your stomach to growl and to trigger you to eat. Soon as the stomach is stretched and full, the secretion of this hormone stops. This hormone is found in the same cells in your brain as leptin. The sleeve surgery cuts 60% of Ghrelin levels in the long term. The bypass however after stabilization patients will regain the Ghrelin levels they have lost. Thats because with the bypass you still technically have your stomach and with the sleeve you loose 85% of it. I work part time in a primary doctors office and my doc just told me all this when I asked. I am just a few days from being a year out and my tummy grumbles more than it did just after surgery. Which I ignore and drink my Water because I know my snack or meal time isn't that time.

Thanks! I find that it is noisiest after I eat....and I never really feel hungry in relation to the noise. I am 7 months out and the rumbling really started in earnest around 3 months out.

Interesting stuff!

My year is three weeks away, and MIss Tummy is still very noisy when I am drinking fluids between meals. It sounds like a dinosaur fight.

Wish I could turn down the tummy volume when I am at work. I do one on one teaching and sometimes my stomach has its own opinion

Right? My stomach makes just about as much noise as my cat. And most of the time when I am not hungry at all.

Whose stomach is the loudest of them all? MY stomach! Loud gurgling and odd noises that rises into my throat. But never escapes as a burp. Grrr. This goes on all day and night long. But mainly after I eat. It has nothing to do with me being hungry. I don't want to eat or drink around people. When I do eat with my teenage son, he just give strange annoying looks.

I don't know if I agree with the theory above as my stomach stopped making noise at about my 6-8 month mark. Before that, though... My kids would eat in absolute silence so they could listen to the noises my tummy made when I ate.

@LipstickLady. Six to eight months. Ok, I'm gonna keep hope alive. Hopefully I will no longer sound like an alien from out of space.

I went to my 1 year follow up appointment and actually asked my surgeon this question! Basically he said your stomach is just as rumbly as it has always been...but without all the insulation, you can hear it now! So the extra 15 inches of fat around my mid-section was muffling all the noises going on in there :)

@SparkleCat. Interesting, so I have to live with this noise the rest of my life, because I don't plan to gain back the fat insulation. I'm worried though because my stomach rumbles, LOUDLY, whenever it wants to. After I eat, it's the worst and I eat VERY slowly. After I drink, it's the rumbling and burping. On another note......I wear a size freaking SMALL!!!! Size 18W, disgusting loud tiny stomach? I'LL take door number two, please.

My stomach gurgles for about 15 minutes after I eat. Then all is quiet again

My surgeon said it's the excess air you're swallowing as you eat and drink. It's your stomachs way of pushing it out that's what the noise is.

Most of my tummy rumbles happen after eating or drinking, although it has been known to fumble, gurgle, etc. at anytime. It sounds weird, but I figure it's just a fact of life at this point.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
