VGB 130 Posted November 25, 2014 I asked this question in pre-op, but I want to know:If you did not tell your job about having surgery and how did that work for you?
skikyd 165 Posted November 25, 2014 I told only some people. After people notice, if they don't know, they wonder if you are sick ( cancer). I now tell everyone if they ask. ********* ALERT*******: no one notices the first 75 pounds!
NewLife'sGr8 241 Posted November 25, 2014 I didn't tell my employer. I believe in separation of employer, and employees' personal medical information. There's good reasons for HIPPA Law. I did speak with one other person who'd been banded around the same time who was doing well with it. Several others had been banded but I didn't trust they'd keep mum. April4 24 Posted November 25, 2014 I didn't tell my employer either. They knew I was having surgery and that's all the information I gave.
hatters 47 Posted November 25, 2014 I told my supervisor that I was having surgery and needed to use my sick leave. I told him its personal and ask to keep it private. I think he assumed it was a lady thing but he never pressed and if he did I would of asked if I was required to tell him suck details(b/c I am pretty sure I am not). Its been a year since my surgery and no one at my work knows that I have had it. Acutally only a hand full of people know most I told in the last month b/c they are having the surgery next month and were telling me of their fears and I wanted to tell them its going to be alright. BigGirlPanties 957 Posted November 25, 2014 Based on HIPAA laws you don't have to tell them. HR will get the forms from the doctor for your disability/FMLA leave time...but they cannot tell anyone either. I didn't go around announcing it (who does?), but if someone asks, I tell them, I'd like them to be informed of how well it works. I haven't had one person say "that's the easy way out" or any other stupid responses. More and more people are informed of the benefits... Bottom line...ball in your court, your decision! 10 28 2014 45 Posted November 25, 2014 I had hernia surgery
lovebugg2013 34 Posted November 25, 2014 I was planning on just saying hernia surgery. However, I fell and hurt myself at work 3 days before surgery and didn't have to disclose a thing. Everyone assumed I was out for workmens comp. Since I was out out on workmens comp. I was able to go back to work with very minimal duties.
livvsmum 2,369 Posted November 25, 2014 I didn't tell anyone, but the HR person probably knew because of the FMLA paperwork I had to hand in. Other than that,I haven't told anyone at work. I didn't feel the need to share my medical history with anyone. I'm guessing at this point, only 1 year later and down 140 pounds, that some probably know on their own.....but no one has asked me or anything.
amazon 579 Posted November 25, 2014 I submitted for FMLA, just because you never know if something doesn't go quite right and more could be needed. According to my HR person, she doesn't even look at the paperwork - she just files it away. I told my boss (male) that I was just having a procedure and needed recovery time. Two close colleagues, I told. Other than that, I really didn't want to be the subject of the gossip - it can be like kindergarten here. Soon folks will forget how much I've physically changed and will get on with their lives :-) When I've been asked I've said I'm going to a weight loss center (true) and working with a nutritionist (true). Outside of work, it's completely different - I tell anyone who asks.
VGB 130 Posted November 25, 2014 My thing is, I work for a small company (self owned) with all women! We have no "HR" and HIPPA is only good if you can prove someone has said something! I am not saying a word! I am taking a week off. Doctor said it is possible.
Quest4TheNewMe 225 Posted November 26, 2014 I told my boss that I was having surgery, but nothing beyond that. I have now told two close friends at work what I had done , but I didn't tell them until post-op. I'm only 12 days post- op though, so we'll see how that goes as I get further out. Zane's Mom 184 Posted November 27, 2014 I only told my work that my bloodwork had been off for a while and I was having a hernia repaired. I told them I was under a strict dietary plan because of my lab work etc. They have noticed and mention the loss but I always talk about the nutrition first. They all know it's about the Protein. They know I wear my fit bit and always have a 20oz tumbler of Water everywhere I go. What's crazy is I just blurted out today to my pharmacy about my surgery. My family knows and friends. Kind of odd how I tell some and exclude others.
LeeBee17 80 Posted November 27, 2014 I didn't tell my company, just said it was surgery. I took Friday off (surgery day)...was back at work on Tuesday. It's none of their business.

How did that work for you? I mean how did you feel at work on your first day back?
