Starting solids today and very nervous

Recommended Posts

I am 4 weeks post op today and I beging stage 4 of my post op diet. This includes adding solids that are "soft" but no longer puréed. I am very nervous about starting to eat solids again. My main concern is if I will tolerate them and then I am concerned and I know this sounds silly, but will I gain weight????? Just wondering how anyone else handled beginning to eat solids again. Thanks????

I didn't gain weight, actually the opposite. I am losing more. I didn't have any difficulty eating anything at all. Hope all goes as swell for you!

Personally I got down on my knees and thanked Jesus because purees were the worst. THE WORST!. The first thing I had was deli ham and it was like the skies opened up and angels sang from heaven. No really. Purees were THE WORST (mind you I was only on purees for a week but it was the longest week of my 37 years of existence - for reals).

You are going to get full really really fast on those soft solids. Like, one piece of that deli ham will do it for you. So fret not, you will not gain weight on soft solids unless you are cheating your sleeve and overeating. You just have to remember portion size is everything. Further out when your stomach is fully healed and you can eat more, portion size will come into play even more intensely.

I had scrambled eggs with cheese at first. It was Heaven. I hit a stall at 3 weeks but it didn't last long. Solids are tricky. Just try mild, greaseless foods until you are able to experiment more. I am 11 weeks and pretty much stick to ground turkey, canned chicken, eggs, cheese, almonds, oatmeal with Protein, yogurt smoothies, and Protein Shakes.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
