To be sleeved or bypass?

Recommended Posts

I need help! Can you please share with me why you chose bypass over being sleeved? My medical team is telling me I would benefit more from the bypass because it would get rid of my diabetes whereas there's less of a chance of that happening with the sleeve. They tell me I'd also lose more weight. Thank you :)

Just wondering if you also suffer from Gerd or reflux as well as diabetes. The reason I ask is both surgeries will help with getting your diabetes into remission. Gastric bypass will cure reflux or Gerd whereas the sleeve can actually make that worse. I was all set to move forward with the sleeve and learned about the reflux issue. I suffered my whole adult life with that. It was an easy decision for me and I have to say it has solved both my diabetes and reflux. Woo Hoo!

Make sure you learn as much as you can about your health issues and choose the surgery that is right for you.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I chose the bypass because

  • greater weight lost potential.
  • more likely to cure for diabetes and GErD.

I'm in the same boat as the previous commentors here.... I have diabetes, and was all for getting the sleeve... untill my doctor advised against it due to my reflux. He even advised me that he had two patients on tube feeding due to extrem GERD after their sleeves, and that as soon as they were well enough, he would have to do a full revision to a bypass. He also advised that the bypass would most likely help get rid of my diabetes, which given the comorbidities that go with diabetes, is a huge plus. Diabetes is the begining of a cascade of other issues like high cholesterol, kidney failure, high blood pressure, increased risk of cancer,Atherosclerosis, and so on. Diabetes was my deciding factor in getting WLS. Hope this helps you.

Im a completely healthy girl. Before surgery I had a mild case of sleep apnea and thats it. Even at my heaviest. I chose the gastric bypass and I am so glad I did!

I agree with the above statements due to my diabetics and history of upset stomach I choose the bypass and I do not regret it, I only wanted to have one surgury without any revisions as well as it is the gold standard , I could not risk any additional surgery , as well as time off from work so I wanted to get it right on the first go around and with insurance ever so changing I was not going to risk a denial when my insurance covered a 100%. Good luck .

Its very confusing. Im also wondering which surgery is best.

My surgeon is pushing me for a bypass but I initially wanted the sleeve.

The malabsorption issue you get with the Bypass is very concerning.

Someone chose for me ????

My sister had the sleeve with great success so I went in thinking I'd get sleeved. After my endoscope my surgeon said he wouldn't do the sleeve because I would suffer from gerd the rest of my life! I had RNY 9 weeks ago, have lost 45 pounds and don't regret a moment. Good luck to you!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
