I am cooking Thanksgiving dinner!

Recommended Posts

I am very excited ... Three months post op... Down 59 pounds... Feel terrific! For some strange reason I am loving cooking more than ever! I think because I feel better .. Not sluggish ! So I am cooking for 10 people. I did all my baking yesterday and not even thinking I licked the spoon .. Omg I have not had any sugar in several months... It was almond joy cookie batter... The spoon just went to mouth... Like I had a brain freeze...I am mad at myself ...btw I made.. Fudge..magic bars .. Cinnamon pecans... chocolate chip cookies... And did not taste anything . I ordered the pies from Whole foods! Has this happened to anyone else where it is just automatic to the mouth?

I can relate. My VSG was Dec. 4, 2013. On Dec. 19th--two weeks post-op--I felt like I wanted to cook a lot of food. I did so: I baked chickens; wild rice; sweet potatoes; string beans; squash casserole; sweet potato pies; lemon cake; something else (can't remember) and I took it to the two men who helped me with my surgery. The guy who took me to/from surgery; and the other guy who housed me for the first 3 days post-op and brought me home.

I didn't eat any of that stuff except for two swallows of the sweet potatoes that I smashed [allowed 'soft' foods].

I just wanted to COOK again; and I still can cook now, so I didn't lose that pleasure of cooking and watching others devour my food. That was a 'fear' of mine--that I "wouldn't be able to cook a lot of food again." Wasted energy. I can still cook for others, and now, just portion for myself.

Congrats on your success, and enjoy cooking!

I find there are a lot of things we did without much thought when it comes to food. One example I have is during my second week post op I was making chicken Alfredo for my husband, daughter and mom. I never time my noodles when I cook I always just stirred them until they felt done and then tasted them to make sure they were done the way we like the. So I'm cooking the noodles and out of habit go to try them and stop and realize.....I can't eat this?? So I had to call my daughter in to taste them for me. Once they were done I put them in a strainer to rinse them. Then I found myself reaching to grab one or two like I would and again stopped. It was so weird how out of habit I was doing things. Then I was making the sauce not from scratch but I doctor it up a bit and once again could not taste it to see how it was.

Well I survived cooking that meal without eating anything but it really made me think about how I used to do things.

I am now 4 weeks post op and have been cooking for my husband and daughter almost nightly. I find myself really enjoying cooking even though I cannot eat the meals yet. :)

Tomorrow I am making a bbq chicken pizza recipe where the chicken is actually the crust and am very excited to try it, it looks so yummy and I posted it on here in one of these forums and then two people that had tried it said it was really good. So this will be the first meal I cook since surgery we all can eat.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
