Why is my Pre-op diet so long?

Recommended Posts

I am starting my preop diet early also. Better safe than sorry and just keeps the weight loss going.

I've reading and seeing that some people didn't have more than 1-2 weeks and some 1-3 days pre-op diet. Why in the WORLD is my doc saying 4 weeks???????????

@@laurenella82 , my insurance is making me have a 3month dr supervised diet like most people have and then 2 wks before he is going to put me on a shake diet until the surgery. The purpose is to shrink your liver down to about the size of a raisin so it is easier to operate.

How long did it take you to complete the whole thing from start to surgery date??? -lauren taylor (LT140)

My date is not set yet. I had to do the three month supervised diet too. It's over Dec 4. Then they will send in my info. I will probably start the 4 week liquid diet on the 8th. It isnup posed to take my insurance company 2 weeks max to approve. I started the process September 8th.

Just a cardiologist and I had to have an ultrasound of my legs to check for DVT. And the regular Nutritionist and Psych eval. When I started I have myself the goal to have everything done by the time I had my last nutritionist appt. which is the 4th. My psych eval is the last piece abs that is scheduled for the 2nd.

Good luck! It's a lot to do but it's all going to be worth it.

You can ask your surgeon, but my best guess would be because of the liver factor as already mentioned. Look at it this way, you will be better prepared for the 2 week liquid bari diet post op. Best of luck to you, I know you got this :)

For me it has been reassuring to know that I can do it and stay on it post op... knowing that you 'can't' have something can really screw with your head, especially if you have control issues - or food issues - or use food as stress relief - or, yeah.. all the stuff that caused me to need surgery in the first place. :)

I was told the more you lose before surgery, the greater your chances of reaching goal. I'm down 22 and trying for 30 (four weeks to go). If my doc puts me on a long pre-op diet, I will be disappointed but OTOH, it will help me focus. Good luck and hang in there!

I think I'm gonna start Monday just for me. I have my last appointment with the NUT on Thursday. She may not put me on it until after that but I want to try it without so much pressure first.

Hey, you gotta start sometime. The more you lose preop the closer you are to goal! I was so excited I actually started my preop diet early and lost 10 pounds more than my surgeon wanted me to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
