YIKES! Weight Loss Surgery bill came today!

Recommended Posts

I got my surgery bill from the hospital today. The bill included my two night stay in the hospital and included many things that don't make sense. The total cost of the two days came out to be $29,520.96. That seems like an awful lot. Is this amount quite average for sleeve surgery? How much was your surgery bill? Of course, I'm not paying all of it. I do have insurance that is ssuppose to cover most of it. By the way, my surgery was done at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Yep, from the research I've done that's about right!

@@WL WARRIOR Yikes! I haven't received mine yet but it's all covered by insurance so it will be interesting to see how much the "new luxury car" costs that is now my new stomach! I did however get a bill from the Anesthesiologist department (also covered) and it was 1445.00.

Wow. Mine was $4600.00 cash price. My insurance said if you are fat we aren't responsible, go on a diet. Then they tripled my rates due to Obama care. :-/

@@pinkbunies

unbelievable!!!!! :o

@@WL WARRIOR

WLS sure does cost a lot of money

used to be most all insurances covered the lapband and gastric bypass

"they" would since the sleeve is too new, experimental

things are fffffinally changing

insurance companies are more frequently recognizing the sleeve

medicare now covers the sleeve :)

i know one big prob is that many employers don't cover any WLS

my history of insurance was kindof weird

i was told i couldn't submit bill to medicare til after surgery

then they had 30 days to respond

i was denied

3 years ago medicare did not cover the sleeve

bill then went to secondary ins. BCBS

took over a year of fighting

my 36,000 dollars and change was finally paid in full!!!!

no deductible, no co-pay, NO WAY!!!!!

phew, lot of worry, but even having to pay would have been worth it

but i'm glad i didn't have to pay

45 lbs down

woo hoo

keep up the good work :)

I have Medicare & ChampVA & they are covering this surgery. I was shocked to see my bills for the surgery all added up to around $50,000. It's worth it because I won't have to deal with issues (or very little) for oxygen & heart along with other issues from being 150lbs overweight. Part of what jacked up the cost of the surgery itself is the Hiatal Hernia repair & the surgeon had to cut thru a lot of scar tissue from a previous surgery. I was only in the hospital 2 nights. My surgery was done at Baylor Plano, Plano TX. Great place, great surgeon, great care, period.

wow! I was self pay in Mexico for my VSG ($6500) so the only other surgery bill I have to compare was my cervical neck fusion. I had it done at the neurosurgery department at the University of Utah....the surgery itself was nearly 3 hours long and involved removing a disk, implanting cadaver bone and putting the whole thing together with a titanium plate and 4 screws. Postop X-rays, 1 day in ICU, a visit from an occupational and physical therapist, neuro rounds with the residents, and WAY more pain Meds than I had for VSG, and it still only came to $35,000!

Mine is around $60K. Of course that's what the hospital bills, not what will end up being paid. My out of pocket is $2400. Well worth it.

I was self pay and the total charge for my surgery was $24,000 of which about $13000 went to the hospital and the rest to the surgeon, anesthesiologist, etc. I also needed a hiatal hernia repair during surgery that I had to pay an additional bill just for that ( to the surgeon). I had to pay everything upfront -no billing, no payments!

My sleeve with 1 overnight was about $33k for the hospital, surgeon bills, anesthesiologist etc. I don't recall what ins paid. Probably about half of that. I paid about $2k out of pocket. So worth it.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
