I HAD MY SURGERY

Recommended Posts

We thought it might be the IV too but I've been off IV 24 hrs now and like clockwork it goes back up when the meds wear off. I have a pcp appointment Monday to follow up. Hopefully it's under control by then.

My sleeve was 13th of November and I woke up in icu with horrible nurses. I didn't have a tube so vomited all that basty old bloody blackish stuff from my stomach. I had the nurse in my room every 2hrs wanting me up to walk. I had a stress headache that never left til I left the hospital. I had a temperature from 99.5-100.8 constantly. I left icu 4days later. And came home depressed because I couldn't drink 1oz of Fluid. But on my one week checkup wth my surgeon Dr. Otah I'm 14lbs thinner and it has gotten better

I finally figured out last that if I pull my stomach muscles in it helps to subside a lot of the pain. I was so use to holding my stomach in before surgery and had not been doing it post surgery until now. The difference in pain is unbelievable. I keep thinking "was I supposed to be doing this the whole time"...."did someone tell me this and I missed it?". I hope I didn't damage anything by not doing it the first few days.

Everyone is different and tolerates pain differently so what's painful to one person another person can handle It might suck for a few days but it will be worth it in the end

Well, this past Wednesday as planned, I had my surgery. Gastric sleeve.

OH MY GOD I WAS MISERABLE!!!

We read all these stories about success and how wonderful everything is after the surgery. I never thought about how miserable I would be waking up after surgery. You can't move, you can't drink, can't stretch, nothing. But, as the days go by, things get a little easier. I have a long way to go but I'm recovering nicely. I'm 4 days post op and I'm able to move around on my own for the most part as long as it doesn't involve bending over. I'm down 15 lbs since starting my Preop diet 5 days before surgery. It's funny because I keep thinking this recovery would be so much easier if I were skinny. Oh the irony.

Felt the same way. No one shared the recovery process. Almost made me regret the surgery. Tomorrow makes one week post-op. I'm getting better each day. I feel when I'm hungry. Don't feel a difference sometimes. But I know when my body don't like something. Tried pureed turkey sausage and the feeling of this trying to go down was painful.

I appreciate the truthful not all fluffy peaches and cream side of things I'm glad you're feeling better After a few surgeries I've realized until you open your eyes you don't know how you're going to feel I've had a few hernia surgeries 6 to be exact and only one kicked my ass that one I was crying like a baby the others no big deal I'm expecting discomfort and it's not being so pleasant but the end results will be so worth it !

I agree with most everyone here. I unfortunately am not new to surgery in general and I didn’t expect to feel as bad as I did. I thought my back was going to explode and it was awful! Didn’t comprehend how hurtful gas can be, but … there is a but, lol it does get better each day. The walking and moving to get the gasses moving work. I took the gas X strips for a couple of days after I got home because as everyone, even the nurses mentioned, the gas pain shoots to your left shoulder, was bad. It helped. I am day 12 and even though my energy isn’t fully back, I’m better than yesterday ;)

Congrats on your surgery. I went through the same miserable recovery, I knocked myself out every chance I could with the pain killers while in the hospital. Hang in there you'll feel better in no time. :)

@@beachgurl84 I had surgery on Wednesday the 19th as well and I'm so sorry to hear that you were miserable. I feel very fortunate that my surgery went so well. I was ready to walk the halls before I could see straight. I have had no pain and no nausea from the surgery. I had worried that my surgery would be extra miserable because I started this journey at 460 pounds. I am down now to 419 and feeling amazing. The only problem I am having is eating. I really don't want to eat anything. I am just not hungry at all. It has been a chore to get my daily Protein in. After 1-2oz I just feel like there is no way I can do anymore. I really hope you start feeling better soon so that you to may get to experience the joy that I have from surgery.

It gets better. As of today I'm 3 weeks out and for the most part fully recovered. At 1st, I was thinking I had made a terrible mistake. Now, It the best decision I've ever made.... well, next to asking my wife to marry me...... Have to throw that one in for saftey sake. :)

My surgeon has me on Clear Liquids for the first two weeks post op. The only Protein Shakes I can have are the clear Isopure drinks.

I am two weeks out. The first couple of days I felt like death. I came out of the General anesthetic really badly and could breathe very well and almost ended up in ICU - I did have a slight cold though so that probably didn't. I still get very nauseous in the AM and was allowed to start puree's yesterday. But the puree's get stuck no matter how small a bite and how slow I eat.

I am in Australia and I still marvel at how in the USA you are only in overnight there was no way I was capable of leaving the next day I couldn't eat or drink for about 3 days! I was in for 3 nights ( common practice in Australia) and they tried to keep me for another night! Also with our private health insurance they don't question your comorbidities or BMI if you are covered by insurance (or prepared to pay) you can have the operation. Also our process is quick I went to a talk by a surgeon and five weeks later I had my operation!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
