What are some cream soups for post op

Recommended Posts

Hi. I had my surgery on Tuesday. It's says I can have cream based Soups. What would be some good cream based soups. I was thinking cream of broccoli because I like it, but was thinking maybe it would cause gas and not be a good choice? Anyone have any suggestions. I won't be making it homemade it will either be from a can or a restaurant. Thanks for advice

I started eating Soup on day 11 post-op. The only soup I ate was Campbells Cream of Mushroom, straight out of the can (like a BOSS!) :-P And don't worry about gas, everything you eat is going to cause gas for the next few months. :-P

I get mine at COSTCO-- Progresso Potato and Clam Soup with the potato chunks taken out. Then I add a can of chicken bouillon to thin it out a bit. It was a little too thick during early post-op.

Cream of broccoli would be fine. I ate broccoli and cheese Soup (with the broccoli strained out) with no bad effects. If you have difficulty with it, it may help to make it a little thinner than normal.

You can, if you have a ninja or other such fancy blender, blend any Soup like cream of broccoli or cream of chicken down to a smooth consistency. These are also good Soups to add plain Protein powder to (but, do not add them when the soup is boiling hot otherwise it will curdle your powder and the texture is just gross - sadly I know this from personal experience).

I added unflavored Protein powder to...

broccoli cheese Soup

Strained French onion

Cream of asparagus

Cream of shrimp

Lobster bisque

Butternut squash soup

Portobello mushroom

Swanson's hot and sour soup starter

Swanson's tortilla soup starter

Strained wonton soup

Cream of mushroom

Cream of spinach

And I pureed split pea soup and bean soup (they have enough protein....didn't add the unflavored protein)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
