newbie and prep questions!

Recommended Posts

Morning everyone! My name is Shannon and I live in Kansas. My surgery date for the sleeve is 12/16. I'm so happy to have come across such a great website with all of these resources!

I'm wondering what everyone else is doing to prep for surgery? Did you buy a blender and food processor etc? What other things are you making sure are in place in your life before you have surgery? Also, what Protein Powder is everyone using? I've seen so many suggestions it would be nice to get some real life suggestions too :)

Congratulations! I'm sure you're very excited to be in your last few weeks before surgery! It's a really exciting time! I was sleeved in June and to prep for surgery I...

- stocked up on all my "food" chicken broth, Popsicles, baby food, Protein powder (my hospital reccomended Bariatric fusion so I got that. I didn't love it. GNC has one that is similar that I perfer) and light yogurt. You aren't really going to feel like going out very much the first couple weeks, and remember you aren't supposed to be driving so I got everything I needed as far as that went.

-I also did a major cleaning in my house. Washed all the bedding, disinfected, de-cluttered everything. It's much nicer to come home to recover when you have a clean home!

- I also got magazines to read. You are supposed to be up and walking every hour, but your body does need a lot of rest too- so I made sure to have things to keep me entertained.

- I wrote in my blog a TON! Writing helped me sort out all the emotions I was going through.

-Something fun- buy a cute outfit in your dream size! It's nice to have that in your closet to keep you motivated :)

Good luck!!

I did buy a very small one cup food processor that someone else recommended...I will make my own baby food thank you very much B) but that's just because I like to cook and really dislike additives/chemicals and salt. I also found a very cool 4oz shot glass at Walmart that I think will help me keep track of how much I'm taking in (my date is 03 December). I also did the whole nesting thing...lol. My house has never been cleaner. I have two good recipes one for chicken stock and one for beef stock that I've made and frozen in ice cube trays...each cube is 1.5 ounces. I really prefer the Premier Protein at costco, but was worried about the texture afterwards (it tends to be a bit thick) so I did get some unflavored Protein Powder and some vanilla. Also got some cool teavana holiday teas...can't eat candy canes but I can drink peppermint Decaf tea...Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
