Anyone going to Mexicali, Mexico for surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm having my surgery in Mexicali, Mexico on January 12th and was wanting to know if anyone else was having surgery there and if they had any questions that they seem were not answered prior to surgery. I'll admit I'm a bit nervous to go out of the country but excited all the same.

Hi Veronica, I went to Mexicali for surgery with Dr. Wilhelmy too! You will be in great hands , he and all the staff at the hospital are awesome. I did have to call quite frequently the first couple of weeks mostly questions on the diet. You will meet with Dr. Campos who has a sleeve, is a bariatric dr and nutrition specialty too. He can answer your questions I just did not know what I had to ask when I was there. Do not worry too much the office staff will answer your questions you forget to ask there.

Do not be nervous about going to Mexico, at least not to Almater hospital and wonderful medical team at Mexicali Bariatric. You will feel well taken care of and safe in their care. i would not change a single thing and would take my own mother for surgery there if she needed it.

@@purplelite thank you so much for the info. It is a tough choice to go outside of the US for cost reasons cause we do not get the pre tests done and I tend not to feel as confident when I don't meet the doctor until we are there for the surgery. I will not have anyone going with me so this is a full on me support system and that is making me nervous as well. I thank you though for making me feel a lot better about my choice. I did look into it a lot and was pretty confident but as the time gets closer it is hard to feel good about certain choices.

I am waiting in approval to go to Tijuana. I'm nervous as well about going out of the country. I feel as if I've done all the homework that can be done. Hearing from others just validates that Mexico is fine.

@@nurse ison I think it is an issue for everyone seeking medical treatment outside of their own country but i have spent the past 24hrs getting in touch with you-tubers who have gone to my doctor to get treatment and they tell me that their personal experiences were really great. It is hard to just read a testimonial and feel comfortable with it so I spoke to them on the phone and tried to get as much info from them as i can since I have not had any contact with my surgeon. Good luck at getting your approval!

@@Angel720 Thanks I did a lot of research and come into contact with some people who went to him to. I also found someone who is going to be there the day after me and we have talked on the phone and will be surgery buddies!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
