Hi everyone!!!

So while I'm out of work until Dec 11th surgery, I have a lot of time to plan and get myself and hubby prepared for post surgery. One thing I'm getting ready for next week (Friday I start pre-op diet) is the shopping list!

I'm trying to make sure I do not forget a single thing - so I need your help. What did you make sure you had for pre-op/post-op diets? What did you need definitely in the hospital that you couldn't do without for the 2 days?

My advice is not to buy too much of anything. You'll find that some things you won't eat much of. Like, I went crazy buying a bunch of Jello then realized I really don't care for it that much. You can always make a run to the store. Especially after surgery, it'll give you a reason to get up and move.

Hospital- x strength gas x strips, Biotene mouth spray and lozenges, fem wipes, ipad, extension cord, Chapstick, shower goods including poof ball, makeup wipes to clean my face. Glade plug-in, my makeup/toiletry bag was one that unfolded with a hook so I could hang it on the side of my hospital bed and keep everything within reach (bought at Walmart) My big pillow. The most comf pjs, rob, and stretchy undies I could find. Slippers, 1 Isopure drink. I used ALL of it! There was nothing I needed...the hospital does give you toiletries I just like to have my own brands of stuff.

For the hospital, all I really needed was my cell phone and the clothes I walked in with. I packed all sorts of stuff (I talked about this on another post) but I stayed in my gown the whole time and slept for most of it...a waste of time to really pack much.

For the full liquid diet when you get back home, your options are pretty limited. My "Can't do without" list included: Beef & chicken stock, French Onion Soup (with the onion pieces strained out), sugar-free popsicles (by the boatload), and Crystal Light. That's about it. :)

Pre/post all the liquids, isopure, Premier Protein ready made drinks in all 3 flavors, after surgery only chocolate. Coconut Water (after) Different broths. Jello, Popsicles,...although I didn't care for them. I couldn't have any thing red, purple, or Orange after surgery due to having a JP drain. That's all I was allowed until a week after being home then I could have thick liquids and I was able to go to the store and get the stuff I needed for that phase.

Ahhh, just saw that you're "Sleeving" and I had the Bypass. I don't know if your post-op diet will be as restrictive as mine was, but good luck either way!

You can go to the top of this page and type CHAPSTICK in the search box.

Then click the little down arrow for a drop down menu.

Then click on Forums.

Click the search magnifying glass.

The search will bring up several threads on what you need for the hospital.

Depends on your hospital. The only thing I bought to the hospital was my toothbrush, larger panties and my iPad & charger. I didn't need anything else. The hospital started me on colace and generic prilosec in house and discharged me with a prescriptions for both.

At home I stocked up on a week's supply of several different Protein drinks, powders and liquids. Once I got home and decided which ones I liked, I order larger sizes. I also had kefir, almond milk, vegetable broth, Decaf coffee and herbal tea in preparation for the full liquid phase. If you know what Vitamins and supplements they will want you to take, buy them .

House wise I put fresh linens on the bed, and made sure there was enough food for the cat. There really wasn't anything else to do. Family was a phone call away and the hospital arranged for a visiting nurse.

SF popsicles and a Blender Bottle for mixing the Protein shakes (this is what i could not live without)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
