Raw fiber? How to take?

Recommended Posts

I saw someone posted a recipe using raw Fiber in a Protein Shake. It may have been @@Kindle

What is the best brand, and do we have to be careful of taking it within a timeframe of our Vitamins? Also, will it bind to the Proteins and be counterproductive? Should I take it alone? Just doing some pre-planning for post op...

I use both Garden of Life Raw Fiber and Renew Life Triple Fiber. I chose them because they have the most insoluble fiber I could find. The soluble fiber supplements like benefiber and Metamucil just didn't cut it for my Constipation issues. I just mix it in my Protein smoothie. But be warned.....unlike the soluble fiber supplements, these will not dissolve completely. It will settle out and even cause significant thickening of whatever you add it to. (I tried to mix it with yogurt once and it set up into a very thick gel block ???? ). But I always mix and drink my smoothies from a 24oz. Blender Bottle, so I can just give it a good shake before taking a drink. The other downside to Raw Fiber is that it does have 120 calories per scoop because it's whole, real food. But you're also getting a bonus 7g of Protein. As for me, I've never counted calories, so it's not a big deal. It's not unusual for my "mega smoothie" to end up being 400-500 calories. But like I said, I'm not a counter and I have no complaints about my weight loss.

As for binding with protein, I couldn't find anything confirming that when I googled. But I did find an article that indicated that soluble fiber can bind with, and inhibit absorption of carbohydrates and fat (win win) http://www.livestrong.com/article/526613-does-fiber-inhibit-the-absorption-of-nutrients/

The other thing is, you may not need the high level of insoluble fiber that I do. You may get lucky and not even have an issue with constipation. Others get relief from products like benefiber or Metamucil that mix better than the Raw Fiber and Triple Fiber. Still others swear by prune juice (bonus with that is it goes towards your Fluid goal). But others have had more extreme cases and need laxatives and/or stool softeners. Prior to finding these insoluble fiber products, I was taking benefiber and Metamucil and still had to take Milk of Magnesia at least every other day. I'm just glad I was able to find a happy ending (no pun intended) by simply adding Raw Fiber to my smoothie.

Good luck.

Fiber gummies. They are fruity tasting and help supplement fiber intake.

Fiber gummies. They are fruity tasting and help supplement fiber intake.

Unfortunately none of the fiber gummies contain insoluble fiber so they wouldn't work for me. And FYI, if you have dogs, keep them well out of reach....many are sweetened with xylitol which is VERY toxic.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
