Mine was at my 1 week post-op check. It was with 2 different solutions, one thinner than the other. Both were quite vile But it was cool to watch them go down!

Mine was before I left the hospital. It was pretty cool. I got to watch the monitor while that nasty tasting liquid travelled through my system.

It's possible to have had the leak test without drinking anything or being aware of it. I read the surgery report e-mailed to me and found that they pushed the stapled edge into liquid and see if there are any bubbles. I never had to drink anything.

My surgeon did 3 leak tests.... 1) was done in surgery. The anesthesiologist filled my sleeve with air as the surgeon submerged my sleeve in saline, looking for bubbles. 2) was the drain I had for 3 days. Both internal Bleeding and leakage can be assessed by what the Fluid coming out of the drain looks like. 3) was a barium swallow fluoroscopy 3 days postop (after pulling the drain) I had to swallow a radio opaque fluid while we watching on the display. It was very cool to watch it go down my esophagus, through my sleeve and into my intestines. This procedure also shows the shape and size of the sleeve as well as any leaks, strictures and GI transit time.

My dr does a leak check during surgery. Then a follow up check the next morning with the barium. All done before one can have any liquid. Prior to the barium leak check I was allowed one ounce ice chips only every hour. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
