Protein Supplements

Recommended Posts

I have not had my surgery yet but I am in the phase where my nut wants me to try out some Protein Drinks. I can't find her list of suggestions but if have fallen in love with the Atkins Cafe caramel and cafe mocha latte shakes but they have real coffee in them so I don't think k I'll be able to drink those post-op ????

I wanted to know what Protein drinks you all prefer for post op. And has anyone tried New whey liquid Protein? I got it at Walmart but I haven't tried it yet because I may take it back. It's 42g per 3.8 oz tube.

I use GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder. It's a smaller amount of powder and the granules are smaller. You get 30 grams of Protein per tablespoon. What I like about it is the unflavored part. It does add a very small amount of milk flavor.

In the summer, when it's hot, I add it to milk and the juice from a package of thawed frozen fruit. The frozen fruit I buy is ONLY the fruit. The only sugar you get is from the natural fruit. I've added it to decaffeinated coffee as well, when I was unable to drink caffeinated coffee right after surgery.

In the winter, I add it to my oatmeal. I make up a package of instant oatmeal, add some coconut manna, (it's basically a coconut in a jar), add some walnuts, almonds or pecans and a dash of milk. I add stevia if it's regular oatmeal and if it's the flavored low sugar kind no sweetener. I've also added it to the low sugar hot chocolate. I had some in some Soup yesterday. It was good. Like I said it adds a slight milk taste so keep that in mind. I've never added it to any citrus flavored fruits.

I wouldn't advise you to purchase a large amount of the Protein shakes before surgery as my tastes changed and I got so sick of the super sweet ones.

I order it on Amazon.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery. I hope you have a routine surgery and super easy recovery.

Blessings,

Kathleen

Post-op for the first 2 weeks I used Optifast. It was required by my Drs office. Now I use GNC Total Lean 25. I also mix in Women's Ultra Mega active to get my Vitamins. I tried a few Proteins at Walmart and hated all of them. I agree with the post above. I read preop my tastes buds will change and thought "that won't happen to me". It does happen. What you like now you may not like in a few weeks.

Good luck with your surgery! :)

Thank you! That sounds like a winner!! I'm leery of powdered Protein because the texture gets weird abs I don't like the flavors. I will try that one though. I think the ones I have now may be okay for my 4 week pre op diet but I'll run it by my NUT to be sure.

Go to whole foods or drugs store like cvs. Get s bunch of single serve packs and try them all before buying a large container. I use Orgain organic. It come both premise shakes & powders. I used prosource liquid while in the hospital and during my postoperative liquid phase

Check the ingredients with New Whey - even though the name says whey, if the first Protein ingredient is collagen, run away. That's pretty useless for us.

I drank the Atkins Advantage for the first few weeks after surgery and loved them. They didn't hurt my recovery.

For RTD protein, you may also want to check out Premier Protein and Pure Protein. Both of them have better numbers in terms of protein, calories, and carbs than the Atkins drinks. They also don't have coffee in them if that is a concern. Many people like both brands.

collagen is not the first ingredient, Water is. But the second ingredient is "Complete Protein matrix" which includes collagen protein isolate as part of it's blend of Proteins.

I drink Premier Protein chocolate in the a.m. I couldn't stand it pre-surgery but don't mind now. I add about 1/4 cup Water and ice and think it tastes better. I buy this at costco. I really like whey To Go chocolate that I buy on line. Target has EAS vanilla cream that I also like. I add extra Water and ice to both of these, too, and I add nutmeg to the vanilla.< /p>

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
