Is it better to eat your protein or drink your protein?

Recommended Posts

I am 4 months post RNY surgery and had a question regarding Protein intake. At this stage and beyond, is it alright to get about half of my daily protein from shakes or should it all be coming from just food? Also do the Protein Shakes move through the pouch faster causing us to become hungry quicker? I have really tried to get all of the protein from just food but recently increased my protein after I started working out about 5 days a week. The extra protein is coming from a shake.< /p>

I think it's great you can get all your Protein from food this early on. My NUT keeps nagging me to do the same, but I've stuck with Protein shakes for Breakfast because I can't stomach food first thing in the morning. I also grab one around 5:00 when I still have another hour to work but I need some nutrition. I always work out after my morning Protein shake, and I think that's a great way to make sure that my muscles get the protein they need during recovery. And yes, Protein Shake move through your pouch faster. You may not notice it this early out, but that's true of all liquids, and even mushy foods. I think you are doing great! Keep up the fight!

I don't know if it makes a difference. I'll put it on my list to ask. I've always done and AM shake because I can;t eat and workout and I go to Water aerobics in the morning. Also I'm not a morning person and sometimes find food first thing in the morning nauseating.

Thank you so much! I try to get a few ounces of lean meat at each meal and a little Greek yogurt or a Protein pudding and that gets me what I need. Adding the shake has helped post workouts.

After transitioning to phase IV, I was instructed to try to get all of my Protein from foods. At my three month visit I was cranked up to 70 grams of Protein. At six months, it was 80 grams. Most days that has to include a shake, but I try to get it in by chewing.

My doc wanted me to transition to real food as soon as I could. He said Protein Drinks are okay, but you don't get a lot of the macro nutrients that are in real food.

of course pre and post op, Liquid Protein was vital to get our content up

of course the best way to use Protein is to eat it...but with our lifestyles, sometimes

that can be hard to do...i drink a Protein Shake every morning.....sometimes one in evening

if i desire a chocolate shake (*i like the taste of the one i use*)......and i say use what works

but do not let liquid be the save all for nutrition.

I'm finding it's impossible for me to get even 60 gms of Protein a day unless I put a scoop of Protein Powder in my morning coffee (21gms). I just cannot eat enough. My doctor does not want me to use it, but I'm at a loss as to what else I can do.

I was told to get at least 73g of Protein per day for women, (more if you're exercising). Given I don't want to live on grilled chicken or some other hunk of meat for 3-5 meals per day, I'm going to have to incorporate some protein supplements. COULD I get it with "all food"? Yes. I just choose not to live that way. I'm more satisfied with variety in my diet which helps me stay compliant with eating well. Plus I LIKE a scoop of chocolate why in my coffee! Tastes like a latte and I miss it when I have to use "regular" Creamer. My afternoon supplement, (when I get one), is a PowerCrunch bar which gives me my "cookie" fix. My doc doesn't care how I get my nutritional needs met, just that I'm getting them met, that I've advanced my diet, that I feel good and that my labs are good.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
