I'm nearing the end/beginning of my journey! I made it through the 6 month medically supervised diet, saw the NUT, had the psych eval, and attended a support group. My surgeon is submitting a letter of medical necessity and my date is tentatively set for 1/15/2015!! I'll start my pre-op diet on 1/1/2015. I was so scared at the beginning of this process, but now that I've done my research and read SO MANY posts on this site I am confident I am making the right decision for myself and my future!!!!! :) :)

I had to do the 6 months supervised diet too. I was wondering did you eat a certain way during that time? I do here and there but I still eat pretty bad I'm trying to work on changing that My last appt. visit is December 16th. then I have to go to a 4 hour pre-op class after they will submit for authorization to my insurance company. BTW congratulations on your surgery date it's like I wish it was now but at the same time I know when it comes i'm going to be so nervous lol

@@tshine01,

Hey, my diet was supposed to be monitored by my primary physician who had very loose suggestions and not a real plan. So, for half that time I did Protein smoothies with a Protein Drink,with added frozen banana and berries for Breakfast and lunch and a regular dinner. And I ate whatever I wanted during the weekend but tried to steer clear of carbs and sugars. This stabilized my weight and allowed me to not gain which is was was going on prior. I think I lost 5 pounds the whole time which isn't remarkable but it met the requirement of weight loss, if you think about how much I was gaining prior, I consider it success. You could always ask or pay for separately to see a nutritionist for pointers toward weight loss. They are just hoops, a means to a end. Yes any healthy eating and healthier choices is good practice, but insurance companies seem heartless but it just so happens that investing in your success and compliance have a shared benefit of our ultimate success and their bottom line...its rare that they coincide.

@MisforMimi

When I go to my visits they don't really advise me at all of what I should be eating all they do is ask what do you eat, I'm like okay lol you would think they would have helped me. Even when I met with the dietician she just went over very quickly of things I wouldn't be able to eat and said they will go into detail at 4 hour pre -op class. But my last visit the nurse did say to let go of sugar/carbs and eat Protein and veggies sip on Water all day. Did you find it hard though letting go of carbs and sugars? That seems so hard for me

Its is funny that they assume primary care docs know anything nutrition! Or that they are sympathetic to the harmful cycle of years of dieting and gain back has done to us metabolically. I am so ready for this as a life style change....I have a sweet tooth I can't lie and everyone in my household is not ready to embrace this lifestyle change. One thing that helped me and I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners but I went out and bought a bunch of sugar-free fudge popsicles and stopped buying sugary stuff. I look forward to them now as my little treat. I'm pre-op and Thanksgiving is tomorrow, I'm not trying to go crazy but I will enjoy a serving of dessert. There are plenty of ideas to start substituting for carbs on the internet and different bloggers like the world according to eggface, @jonathanblue has recipes on his blog. I make pizza with cauliflower and almond meal crust. I use spaghetti squash for the noodles in my baked spaghetti. I know some ppl used shaved zucchini for Pasta noodles, but to me zucchini holds so much Water that by the time you add a sauce its watery and disgusting to me....

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
