5 days out.... Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

So today is my first time I feel normal, I had the vsg on 11/10. And today I was actually hungry! I'm still on liquids. I drank 4 bottles of Water with no problem. Taking gulps and all during the day. I drank my Protein Shake which normally takes me 30-45 min, in 15 min. (That was dinner) I was able to drink another bottle of water after that. Now on my 5th bottle right now. Basically I'm feeling no stricture, I kinda feel hungry right now. It's weird. Everyday I'm able to drink and eat more, I know that's my stomach healing and not being so swollen. But I just want to make sure my ability to drink fast and a lot is ok. Cause we all know how the docs would tell you how hard it would be to get liquids in. Just a little advice or peace of mind would be much appreciated. Thanks ????

Everyone is different. I felt hunger and no restriction at about the 1 1/2 week mark. I would still try to eat slowly because you don't want to overeat. I've done it couple of time in the last 3 weeks and it's a miserable feeling. No worries though...just keep trucking along. Your sleeve will tell you when you've eaten too much or drank too much.

Thank you! I know I'll feel that stricture and fullness while on solids. Just right now I feel almost normal. Not what I was expecting 5 days out. But at least I don't have to worry about dehydration ????

liquid is as slidery as a slider can be. It's not going to make you feel full or satiated. For the first two weeks post op, I was not hungry at all. After that hunger came back for me. But by then I was on soft solids. Once you get on purees or soft solids you will really feel the restriction. One piece of deli ham will be enough. Or you'll eat like, three spoonfuls of chili and be stuffed.

I was sleeved the same day as you. I am not drinking as much but I was just saying I have yet to feel full or hungry. Hopefully in a week at my NUT appointment I will go to at least puree so I can try yogurt, pudding etc and get a better sense of what is full, when I am restricted etc.

Good to know Forsythia that you have more of sense of your sleeve when you are eating a bit more "solid" so to speak foods.

I was sleeved November 10th as well. I'm on a full clear liquid diet, I know that every surgeon is different with what they want their patients to do. I have not felt hungry yet. But I have felt like I want to eat everything in sight. I think that's called head hunger? not too sure. Either way I think everyone is different.

As has been stated, tolerance vary as does healing rates, hunger pangs, pain tolerance, weight loss, and so on.

I was easily able to drink 100oz of liquids 5 days after surgery, including Protein shakes. I also felt like I was able to get too much down too fast. I was a bit worried about that.

But then when I went to mushies and started eating egg whites and cottage cheese...wow, then I felt where my itty bitty tummy would fill up very fast. However, those foods still moved through fairly quickly. I found that ground turkey filled me up faster than ground chicken...I could easily overdo it on the ground turkey. I weigh out all my food. 4oz is my limit.

Now that I'm transitioning to solids...double-wow...yeah, the itty bitty tummy fills up fast, I have to chew alot, and eat slow. It's a learning curve, but not a painful one.

I did not feel physical hunger much at all the first couple weeks, though I did have rather low energy. Now that I'm a little over 3 months out, I do feel a bit of gnawing all over my body when I go more than four hours without eating. But I try to space out my food so I'm eating something every 3-4 hours, plus I add some Protein Drink to my Decaf iced coffee throughout the day to keep a steady low flow of Protein. However, today I went about six hours without eating and I was feeling a bit low on energy and I ravaged down my 4oz a bit too fast...live and learn.

Thank you so much for your reply! I have a feeling I will be a lot like you! What are your favorite things to eat? ????

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
