ngoycoanaya 18 Posted November 16, 2014 My nutritionist said that it would be fine as long as it was sugar-free and that I didn't swallow it
carol9077 25 Posted November 16, 2014 I'm not sure but I am 2 1/2 weeks post op. I started chewing gum. I find it helps me out by me not putting other things in my mouth that I should not have.
Summer Rain 245 Posted November 16, 2014 My surgeon said no gum for 6 months after surgery. Just be careful not to swallow it.
ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted November 16, 2014 (edited) Can you chew gum after surgery? @@VGB always listen to what YOUR NUT or doc tell you my NUT brought up the subject of no chewing gum in one early session i thought the subject was funny in a weird way i am not a normal gum chewer (rare occasion maybe) she explained you might swallow it no big loss for me but, those of you that like to "flap your jaws! - good luck kathy Edited November 16, 2014 by proudgrammy

BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted November 16, 2014 (edited) Can you chew gum after surgery? I was told "NO" because it can bring extra gas into your system. That and drinking straws were not recommended. Edited November 17, 2014 by Blerdgirl
finediva 979 Posted November 17, 2014 I'm not a gum chewer, makes me hungry, but my NUT was very firm...... no gum and no straws. But every program is different. I follow mine. Don't want no problems over here!
sparklesofblue 2 Posted January 8, 2015 #8 Oh my gosh, I needed something for my breath today and my co-worker gave me a piece of gum. I only planned on chewing it for 5 minutes or so, but I became busy and after about an hour I felt this burning in my throat right before lunch. I started walking and the burning in my throat and upper chest would not go away and I threw-up white foamy stuff a few times. I ended up leaving work and going to my doctors office, partly because my stitches were sticking out and needed snipping and to talk about my burning. It finally subsided a little over two hours later. The NP told me that it was probably due to the acid in my stomach coming up and settling in my throat and chest after chewing the gum from lots of air going to my stomach. No more gum for me! Sorry it was you, but glad you let me know before I had my surgery and began to chew gum! I guess I will be bringing toothbrush and toothpaste to work! Miss Mac 6,262 Posted January 8, 2015 When I had my surgery 12/23/2013, I packed GasX Strips because I had on this forum that they were handy for post-op gas. as it turns out, they are good for funky horse breath, too.........and they dissolve in your mouth. jenbaby75 283 Posted January 9, 2015 The issue with straws and gum are extra air. After a few weeks you can use a straw, gum too. If swallowing gum is a concern, you probably shouldn't chew it, sleeve or no sleeve.
