Hello everyone, I am new and my name is Donna. I had my gastric bypass Dec 2nd 2013, almost a year ago. My starting weight when I first entered the program I was 262 lbs with type 2 diabetes. I tried every diet you can think of plus I've had 3 lower back surgeries and one upper back surgery and walked with a walker and a cane and use a powerchair. I also have a infusion pain pump (which will be coming out hopefully next month) and live with chronic nerve pain daily. I lost 30 lbs on my own in 3 months before my surgery as they suggested, so my weight day of surgery was 242. Of course at first your losing so much weight the the first 3-4 months, well at least I did, losing 5 lbs a week. However it did slow down a lot. Today I have no sign of being diabetic and I hardly use my cane to walk now which is great. I am now 154 lbs, I have to admit that 3 weeks ago I was 150, but I started to slip and ate things like Pasta, breads and even sweets. I do know how to get back down but my biggest and most challenging problem has always been taking a small bite every 5 mins, especially when your hungry. Something I never mastered since my surgery and I'm glad but shocked at the same time that I still lost the weight. I don't want to stretch my pouch and I fear that I already have. Can someone please give me some helpful tips on how to continue this journey please, any and all suggestions will be helpful. Thanks for reading my first post.

I am 18 months post-op from RNY surgery. I lost my weight in the first 7 months and then entered the maintenance phase. I was diabetic prior to surgery and it has gone into remission right after surgery. Because of the diabetes, I exclude sugar from my diet. I get my sweet tooth satisfied with natural sugars found in fruits and milk, and with Splenda and Stevia.

Generally weight gain in the maintenance stage is associated with grazing which causes the pouch to get bigger. Weight gain follows. Grazing on carbohydrates does not satisfy hunger. It is good to graze on Protein. In my case, I have included fats back into my diet because they satisfy hunger. If you must graze on sweets, I would recommend using Adkin's treats. They contain some fats that will satisfy and should not elevate your blood sugar levels.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
