4LgrLife_53 82 Posted November 16, 2014 Woke up to a chill and looked outside--snow!!! Ugh!!! Glad my landlord does the snow removal. But it really sucks when it comes to trying to get in my walking and exercising. Going to try to make it to the gym as soon as the city puts some sand/salt on the roads. Thankfully the doctor released me to hit the pool for lap swims and Water aerobics already! The gym I go to has a lap swim pool and a water aerobics exercise class. I really hate WINTER! WL WARRIOR 692 Posted November 16, 2014 You are so lucky to have access to a gym. I live in a rural area and the drive takes 30 minutes or more. I have been speed walking outside 3-6 miles a day. I did it yesterday during snow flurries and now my face is wind burned. Maybe I'll sign up to the gym after all.
LAG50 46 Posted November 16, 2014 For those who can't get outside - while it may not be fun, (or maybe it will be), remember that there are a variety of stretching, beginning aerobic, etc, videos available to do at home. If you're among family/children you may need to get a little more creative, but it's definitely worth it if you can't get outside or to the gym. Best wishes with your new lifestyle. MrsMike1 34 Posted November 16, 2014 I like all of Leslie Sansone's DVDs. Walk away the pounds, etc.. They have power walks, strength training all incorporated into one for at home exercise. Also, if you have Comcast cable , you can go On-Demand for free exercise workouts.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted November 16, 2014 Always have a back up plan. I like in the city but my street is small. Sometimes the streets are passable if the snow is heavy , or even worse the plow comes through but ends up blocking my car in. I don't like working out at home, but I have hand weights here at home. I will use On Demand videos. I also have a weighted hula hoop and an exercise ball. In a bind I can get in a workout.
Luvin_Life125 558 Posted November 16, 2014 We live in the boonies and near Lake Superior so winter lasts way longer than summer here. I injured my back when I was 20 when I slipped on ice. The fall has permanently disabled me and I am only 36. I am VERY Leary of frozen ground or potentially frozen ground because another fall may be more than I can handle mentally, emotionally, and probably figuratively. Right now I do the Leslie Sansone walk away the pounds DVD, beginner yoga videos on YouTube, I bought a used copy of Zumba for the Xbox, and I will probably stick with this exercise assortment for those days we can't get out of our driveway. We also are signing up for a gym blocks from my kids school so I have somewhere to walk without worry and later advance my exercise as I can. We drop my kids off at school every morning (other wise it is a 1.5 hour bus ride) so we plan to he straight to the gym after dropping the kids at school. I am only 5 days post op so I am still laying the foundation for when I feel better and advance beyond my walk at home DVD. You can also contact local hotels. Some of them offer a "gym membership" for their fitness center and or pool for a really reasonable rate. I am also researching snow shoes and learn to cross country ski programs in my area. You really have to look at what you have available to you and how you can use it to your advantage. Exercise doesn't have to be done in a gym and it doesn't have to be drudgery. You can find fun ways to burn calories and save money.
Luvin_Life125 558 Posted November 16, 2014 ps and yes we already have over 20 inches of snow on the ground. Last winter we had over 8 feet on the ground by the end of February. Our decks, railings, fences, bushes and any other landmarks were completely buried.

If I lived that far away, I would get a basic free weight bench and weights + ankle weights + dumbells. In some respects, this is better than the large gym machines because you also build up the supporting balancing muscles that keep the weights going in a straight line up and down. Also, you could get an exercise bike and stick it in front of the TV to avoid monotony. You could do everything you need with this equipment.
Camarolegend 185 Posted November 17, 2014 Winter...I have noticed I'm more sensitive to cold now. Losing the natural insulation is my guess. I used to keep the home between 66 & 68. Now it's between 70 & 72. That is even feeling cool to me.

Kindle 8,667 Posted November 17, 2014 (edited) Last weekend it was in the 50's and I went horseback riding both days. Monday morning it was minus 15 and didn't get above the teens until Wednesday. Then it "warmed up" and started to snow. It took me almost 3 hours to plow the two feet of snow in my driveway yesterday......7 days after I was just horseback riding in the same mountains that people are currently backcountry skiing and snowboarding in. ???? We might see bare ground again in about 5 months, but it will still be snowing into June. ???? I don't follow any type of formal exercise program or go to the gym. But Shoveling my sidewalk and a path out to the horses was all the workout I needed this weekend. The ski resorts will be open by Thanksgiving, so I can hit the slopes! And like Luvin Life, there's always snowshoeing and Xcountry skiing. Edited November 17, 2014 by Kindle
