I am so excited but a bit worried

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone, I just had to tell someone how happy I am to get my surgery date, it is June 5 ! I have to got to two pre-op appointments on the 24 and 25 of this month. I assume they will tell me what to eat the day before surgery. I have one very important question I am wondering if any of you had trouble with vomiting after surgery or in general if you got the flu ? That is the only thing I am scared of. Is it possible to vomit and not hurt your band ? I have to tell the Dr that I have a really bad reaction to being put out . I always wake up vomiting. They told me that there are really good anti- nausia meds now. I hope so. Thanks so much for any info you can share.

First of all, congrats on getting your surgery date! It won't be long until you're in bandland!

I was on a 2 week liquid diet prior to my surgery, but some people are only advised to do liquids for two days prior. Just do whatever they tell you to do.

Yes, anesthesia is better now and you will, I am sure, come out of it just fine. One time I was sick with what I thought was a touch of the flu and I did a lot of self-talk to make sure I didn't throw up. Yes, it puts strain on the band, but I don't think it would be enough to make it slip. I didn't feel naseous at all when I woke up, just tired from the morphine! I slept a lot that day and night in the hospital. I was home the next day by 10am.

Best of luck to you...keep us posted and make sure you find the June Bandsters group - you'll get to know your fellow June Bandsters and build a special bond between all of you. Hope this helped ;)

Congrads on your date. I am the same way being put under I also get sick. Just make sure you tell your doctor and they will give you something to help that. At least thats what mine did and this time I didn't get sick at all.

Congratz on the date! You'll get your pre-op diet instructions at your pre-op visit. I also get sick from general anesthesia. I told the hospital this and will make sure to tell the anesthesiologist prior to surgery as well. They give a shot of something that helps with that. My surgeon said that the band is most vulnerable during the first six weeks, so follow the diet plan to the letter to try to keep vomiting to a minimum ;)

I was told being sick (with throw up) post-op has to do with your family history of dealing with anesthesia, and if you have the bacteria h-pylori (sp). My doctor found some correlation with post-op sickness and h-pylori so that's a test they do pre-op.. if you have it, he treats it with antibiotics before you go under. I didn't have it, but he said it's common. My parents have had surgeries in the past 5 years, and no one got sick. I had my tonsils out when I was a kid and I didn't get sick.. My doctor said vomiting post-op is a concern, because it can hurt the stitches. I bought that anti-nausea stuff.. comes in a liquid form, don't remember the name and kept it in my bag for the first week just in case.. but I NEVER felt nauseated.. not once.. since being banded. In the hospital, if you're throwing up I think they will give you something for it, so if you feel nauseated, BEFORE you throw up, make sure to ask for something ;)

Congrats on your date!!!

Congrats on your surgery date! I didn't get sick at all, but if you get sick easily I would mention it to your surgeon because they can give you something ahead of time.

Good Luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
