Surgery while on blood thinners?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! I had a recent blood clot and I am now on the blood thinners xarelto. I know I will have to stop the thinners before surgery. I am just wondering if anyone has had the surgery that was taking blood thinners and what their experience was like?? I also know once you've had clots in the past you are more susceptible to getting them again (this is my second time getting one) especially after surgery. I'm just very concerned. Thank you!! :-)

Hi there, I can't give you an answer as I am not being sleeved for another 3 weeks but I too am on Xarelto. I was told by my cardiologist that I had to stop taking it 3 days before surgery which is a little nerve-racking. Well, once you're in the hospital they will give you heparin to prevent clots (least that what I'm getting). I'm wondering how long after surgery we can start taking the blood thinner again.

I am hoping and praying that after I lose the weight I may be able to stop this med. I am on it for A Fib which I only get very once in awhile.

All the best to you on your surgery.

Alfie

Thank you! 3 days before, ya that is nerve racking. I just pray it all goes well and no clots after! Thank you for sharing! I am hoping too that losing weight will help with all of this. I wish you the best on your surgery as well!! :-)

I had surgery on Tues. 11/18 & was given heparin in the hospital & a prescription for Lovenox injections to be taken twice a day for 14 days. I had a blood clot from a previous surgery so I am higher risk. Also, I had an IVC filter put in the day before surgery. This is a small filter that will catch any blood clots coming from your legs that could travel to your lungs or heart. This filter will stay in for a month. Hope this helps

Yes! This helps a lot! Thank you so much for sharing! That sounds like what they may do for me! How/where did they put the filter in? Were you put in the hospital before your actual surgery then?

The filter was put in the day before surgery. It was done at the hospital but I went home after it was done. Only takes about 1/2 hour. They make a small incision in the groin area & insert the filter in a vien that runs near your heart. The filter is small & looks like an umbrella. Mine will stay in for a month then will be removed with a small incision in my neck. It is done with just a local anesthia & some sedation for relaxation. Very easy procedure that likely saves many lives. Talk to your dtr about it.

Wow! Sounds pretty simple! I definitely will! Again, thank you so so much! There has been great info on here in regard to people having previous blood clots and what they do to prevent future ones too. Very informative and makes me feel a lot better! :-)

I don't have any history of blood clot issues, but I was given a shot of lovenox right before surgery and then once per day for the next two days that I was in the hospital.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
