3 weeks out; size of pouch?

Recommended Posts

It just dawned on me that our pouch is only supposed to hold 5 ounces. I regularly drink between 8 to 11 oz of Protein Drinks. Is that wrong? Should I split that in half. If I drink the whole 11 ounces does the Protein absorb in our body or go right through. I'm a very slow looser.

I wasn't allowed Protein drinks after week 2. Even then it was 4 oz at a time 2 - 3 times per day! Because it is liquid it is going straight through your pouch, so quantity shouldn't be an issue, it's calories I would be worried about. Do you have a dietician? If not I would talk to someone at your surgeons practice.

I never go over 700 calories a day. I have a booklet guide from my nutritionist but it doesn't meantion the size of the Protein drinks, just how many protein grams I should be getting....

I'm also 3 weeks post op. I'm still having to drink Protein Shakes as well. According to my plan

I'm supposed to drink 2 8oz shakes in a day along with 3 Protein meals and another snack. I will

continue the Protein Shake until I go back in where I will be switched over to a soft diet. So

that puts me at a little over a month of drinking the protein shake. It seems to me that it all

depends on where you have your surgery done. I've heard people on here say that they had to drink protein shakes weeks before surgery, where I only had to be on a clear liquid diet the day

before my surgery. So while this is a great place for information and insight what it comes down to is you have to follow the plan that your surgeon put you on.

I am started my solid foods this week (8th week). I am to supplement my solid food with shakes as long as I need to get 80 gms of Protein. Right now that means two Protein Shakes a day.

As to pouch capacity, I understand that the pouch holds 3-4 oz. I was advised to sip not drink. I sip no more than 1 - 1.5 oz. but I sip continously. I try to finish a 20 z jar over 4 hours and I try to do 3 jars a day

My dr wants me eating 1-3 ounces over half hour of yogurt or Soup. I'm on all liquids still.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
